IIRC, Rastafarians are devotees of Haile Selassie (who was Emperor of Ethiopia for some span of years that I forget in the 20th Century) whom they believe to be a direct descendant of King David.

Haile Selassie was/is expected to be the Messiah. He was a Christian himself and not a rasta. The Rastafarian religion started before Selassie died, but apparently it is not recorded what he thought of this movement that honored him. Many Rastas do not believe that Selassie is dead.

I don't know that they are becoming Jewish. Several websites describe an emotional affinity to the Hebrew slaves. That coupled with their belief about Selassie as a descendant of King David may lead toward some sub-sects taking on aspects of Jewish culture. But, I don't know this.

In short, tho', I strongly suspect that Rastafarian similarity to Judaism is superficial.

As far as I understand it, Ethiopia is the Promised Land and there are tons of other ideas cut and pasted from Judaism. It's not that they're becoming Jewish, it's that they believe the things applied to the Jews of ancient history are in reference to themselves.

And the title Ras Tafari is the original name of Haile Selassie. Haile selassie is only a title to a position such as governor, king, treasurer, etc.
His entire birth name is Ras Tafari Mekonen.
