Does anyone live near the high mountains in western NC? Is there anything to see in Asheville this time of year? Or anything to see around Mt. Mitchell, Cherokee, or that part of NC. I plan on visiting NC next month, maybe the leaves will be changing by then. Probably go over the Smokey Mountain from Gatlinburg to Cherokee and through there toward Asheville. I guess Maggie Valley and the ski resorts don't open till November though. Does anyone know about the weather around Oct. in the mountains there, if the leaves are changing, getting cooler, too early for snow. Last year, I went to Virginia in Oct. (Mount Rogers) and it was already sleeting but the mountains there aren't as high, though.

I live in Morganton, NC. Am from Morehead City & went to college in Boone.

To answer Debbi's questions, there's something going on near Asheville called the "mountain state fair" - you should be able to get info on it from a Yahoo or Google search, and on other local events. Be careful about where you're planning to go though, because a lot of the roads in the mountains (including parts of interstates) are closed and/or because they washed out during the flooding and mudslides from recent storms. There's usually something going in in Asheville (great shopping, if nothing else), and Cherokee hass some cool shops and cultural programs and stuff some of the local Cherokee tribe put on (there's also a casino there, but I've never been). The leaves are just starting to change, and should "peak" around the 2nd-3rd week of Cotober, and it's been up to the 90s a few days, and in the lower 40s some nights, so plan for "unpredictable weather. They're calling for lots of cold & precipitation (rain/ice/snow) this winter, but didn't say when it'd start yet. Snowfall around the end of October isn't unheard of here, but it's usually not extremely cold or wintery then. Wish I could help more with info on local events, but all I could do would be web searches, and I'm sure you've already done those yourself.

Heya Debbi.

I live as far west as you can go and still be in the state. That would be Murphy (at the OTHER end of Hwy 64 from Manteo). We're about 110 miles west of Asheville.

The weather is still very warm - unusually so for this time of year. The high's should be dipping down into the 70's and even high 60's - but we're still hitting 80's on some days. The leaves aren't doing much at all so far, but the next 3 weeks should be the peak color change. You have my sympathy if you're going to drive from Gatlinburg to Cherokee....it will be bumper-to-bumper traffic all the way. You might want to also check out the Blue Ridge Parkway - but (as Raine mentioned) check the internet for any possible road closings.

Asheville usually has some kind of "mountain festival" going on - especially during the Fall. And there is always Biltmore House and Grove Park Inn.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you have good weather and a good time.

Hi Cerek, I went to Gatlinburg and Cherokee yesterday. You are right, traffic was heavy all the way over that mountain. The sign said it was about 40 miles to Cherokee, the longest 40 I seen. More like 60. We went to the Cherokee Museum, have you ever been there? Is there a painting or statue or something near the council building of a child with some kind of animal skin on it's head? Murphy, isn't that near the Cherokee National Forest and the copper mine road?

Hey Debbie. Hope you had a good trip despite the traffic. I've seen the Cherokee Museum but I've never actually been inside. I saw a presentation of "Unto These Hills" several years ago. It's a live-drama re-enactement of the plight the Cherokee suffered up to and including the Trail of Tears. Very moving performance.

Murphy is about 75 miles west of Cherokee, so we are near the Cherokee National Forest, but not in it. We are actually much close to the Nantahala Gorge and Joyce Kilmer National Forest (about 20-30 miles from both). Like I said before, we are as far West as you can go and still be in the state (literally). We are about 20 miles East of the Tennessee state line and only about 15 miles North of the Georgia state line (in fact, I work in Georgia).

Chris, Haywood county, is that near Maggie Valley or Balsam? I went through there the other day. We went to Cherokee Indian Museum and someone told us how to find the interstate going toward Knoxville, TN. I didn't actually see Maggie Valley this time though. Ever skiied there?
