If it has hit the coast of NC and possibly SC anytime since 1982 I've most likely been in it. I live far enough inland (200 miles or roughly 320 kilometers) that we are never too badly effected as compared to the coast. I must say I generally sleep through them.

The worst ones that I remember the names of would be Fran, Floyd, and Hugo. None of them harmed my area as badly as others, but they were notable.

Hugo's damage in my area was mostly due to it's breakoff tornadoes than being directly from the hurricane. There wasn't too much tornado damage in my neighborhood. But there were people at school and church that had lost everything.

Fran flooded part of my neighborhood and took out my power for a week and a half. This one caused damage to about 1/3 of the homes in my development. Some of the neighbors went as far as cutting down all the trees on their lot after this one. Of the 7 homes on my street 4 lost a vehicle, and 3 had roof damage from falling trees.

Floyd flooded the same parts of the neighborhood and more damage to homes.

Overall, I don't really want to be any closer to the coast. In fact, I'd like to get further away if possible.

I was doing a workshop in Miami a few weeks ago where we were bussed to Northern Dade County the day before Wilma hit. Prior to that, I had never really been near a hurricane. I grew up on the West Coast and the Pacific just doesn't get many tropical storms.
