What's wrong, don't like to learn when you watch a movie?

I could NEVER get tired of movies that portray history. They're usually at least decent, very few completely stink. Hardly any are ever completely true without anything fictional included but that's the nature of filmmaking. If one wants to know the total true story they can go research it themselves anyway.

If ya don't like a movie's historical content then don't see it. No one's forcin' ya.

Well many of the historical movies don't portray accurate history, but being brought into that time period is a big plus for historical film. Gladiator, The Last Samurai, Troy, and King Arthur did that. They also had some strong acting in them. The only historical film I wouldn't recommend seeing is Alexander (an epic mess) and the theatrical cut of King Arthur. Watch the director's cut of King Arthur. It's better.

This happens with most movies. It's how the Box Office works to compete with one another. Everytime a major picture that looks promising is released, another company releases a similar movie to try and milk some of the crowd.
LotR > Harry Potter
A Bugs Life > Antz
The war movies... ect

i'm tired of movies that are
based on books
sequels (except LOTR, SW)
remakes
inspired/based on true stories
based on video games
based on TV shows.

You loved Braveheart for a good reason, the movie ROCKED!!
It is my personal favorite, along with Forest Gump.

The major success of Braveheart is the reason why all of these movies (Troy, Alexander, King Arthur, Gladiator, The Last Samurai) were made.

This is nothing new to Hollywood, they make a successful movie, and you can bet your bottom dollar they are going to be making similar movies with a very similar style.
And the only thing wrong with that is the fact that you are eventually going to grow tired of that type of movie.

Actually it was the success of Gladiator that led rise to these war epics being made. Now that I think about it, The Last Samurai isn't much a war film, although there is war in it. It's not the focus like other movies, such as Troy. The Last Samurai is more of a character study (of Nathan Algren). The fight scenes and battles are just used to emphasize the physical aspect about it.

Braveheart? Gladiator? Those, I'm sure, have contributed, but in no way are they the reason these films are being made. Keep in mind that war movies have been big since motion pictures started coming out. Look to old westerns or movies like Ben Hurr. There is no one movie that is the cause for them making these movies.

..I recall pundits say, post-9/11, that the scarier the 21st century gets, the more nostalgia for the past

Don't some movies take @ 2 years to make?

I should think that common comment, in addition to CGI etc advances in FX, got industry planners into over-drive on the escapist aspect of cinema, so I'm sure this phenomenal series of history flix means much thought @ likely future demand & trends

I hit the thread as I plan to see Alexander on Sat pm, at the cheapest cinema in the county: a volunteer-run community cinema, the Plaza, Waterloo

That idea may inspire others to brighten up winter where you are ^_^

If you are reasonably local, it's opposite Crosby Library: all Monday screenings are just £3, & if you join as a member, £5 a year, it's only £3 any day & you get free refreshments at Arthouse presentations!

Must see if there's a thread @ Alexander...

See ya Sat, 3.40pm? ;)

Since the only thing most screen writers are able to come up with is junk. They use history to provide them with a plot. If it weren't for cartoons (Shrek) or these historical mega-dramas, I'd never go to the movies. Why should I pay to watch something I wouldn't watch on TV for free?

That's why forums like this, & Christian review sites, help us sift the wheat from the chaff

Here's a link to the thread just begun on Alexander, with a fine example of the work of the best site I've found for helping us make positive points in the regular cinema conversations where we work, study, hang out, etc:-

YES!! ...and this is why... They all include the leading male actor giving an empowering speech to his army of men, bloody fight scenes, bad humor, and they're all 3 hours long. But, I enjoyed braveheart. Go figure.

You see, you enjoyed Braveheart. What's to say another historical movie won't come along that you'll also enjoy? It wasn't in the box office, was made-for-tv, but the last movie I watched was Spartacus from the USA Network, came out last year. I have never seen the original so I watched this with great interest, I wanted to learn from it; even if it wasn't completely true I could get an idea about the time and events. The empowering speeches by Spartacus to his army of men, the bloody fight scenes and all 3 hours were part of what made it a decent movie. Without those the story very simply could not be told!

I'm not sick of the films... I'm just sick of people saying the films are rubbish, simply because the historical facts are not quite right.

I have always enjoyed learning about history, and I have learned a lot from comparing the plot of historical films with the actual facts.

King Arthur is a good example of the criticism that has been levelled at such films. But for me it didn't matter. I was aware all through the film that the story wasn't quite right, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it because IT'S A GOOD FILM! You don't have to be historically accurate to create a good story or have good special effects or good photography!

Well, I liked Braveheart because it was the first epic movie that I had seen...and I also liked Gladiator, after that I grew tired of the war-epic-movie formula that all the directors seemed to have used.

I actually don't think there is enough of them. As a Christian, I tire of seeing those greek mothology movies (though they have good fight scenes) and their sexual perversion. I desire to see some bible stories bring life to the screen. Sampson, Joshua, Gideon, Elija, Elisha, Jeremiah, King David, ect. Those would be amazing to see. On the other hand, I would not want to see them unless they have a budget of at least $40 mil. :preach:

Thats my 2 cents.
