• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

AL-Anon may be a tad more suited or Co-Dependants Anon. But In any event They are ALL based on the 12 Steps and teach the same principles regarding-powerlessness, gratitude and CHANGE.

Al-Anon is geared for those not addicted to a "substance" and more for the families who have loved ones who are. But Congratulations-admitting there is a problem that needs to be dealt with (just recognizing it) and taking a spiritual approach to handling it is a BIG step (pun intended :) ) toward healing. GFU

Thanks for your response!!!!!!!!!! although I meant christian twelve step programs like Celebrate Recovery or something. I'm just going to go and do it but I am not getting real personal there but to save that for one on one talks. There is a difference between secular and christian 12 step programs and that difference is something that I personally need. Basic Christian beliefs are important to me.

Step 3 of any 12 Step program is "Turning our will and our lives over to the care of God" as we understand Him. There is nothing more Christian. It is just approached from a non Religious perspective, but all 12 Step programs are Spiritual Programs. Perhaps the following might give you some clairity to the approach:

You are reading from the book Each Day a New Beginning by Karen Casey

I realized a long time ago that a belief which does not spring from a conviction in the emotions is no belief at all.
—Evelyn Scott

... From pillar to post we bounced, most of us not knowing what we actually believed about nearly any situation before getting to this program. Perhaps we believed what was most convenient at the time because of the people we were with. And maybe we jumped the fence quickly when in a new setting. Values were sometimes talked about but not defined, and certainly not adhered to.

It's difficult to develop a strong sense of self, to have a very secure self-image when the parameters offered by a value system are lacking. Our values define who we are. They offer us direction when making choices. They quietly demand that we behave responsibly. Living in concert with our values brings peace to our souls.

Gone are the days when we rode first one fence and then another, never knowing what side of any issue we honestly believed in. The program has offered us a plan for living, a plan that erases the many uncertainties, the inner turmoil of past years.

Today will have a clarity about it that I can appreciate. I know who I am. I know what I believe. All I need do is act accordingly.

The AA 12 step program was created by Christian men, and was based on scripture. It was successful, so non-believers started attending. The founders figured this was a good thing, and used it for outreach and a means to share the gospel. It started branching out, and since some who attended still rejected "Jesus" as the higher power, they simply re-worded it so it would speak to everyone. Still, it was founded as a Christian program.

I've been volunteering for a couple of years in a program called Freedom Session. It is similar to Celebrate Recovery, but I found it actually helps develop deeper self awareness than CR, and is a very rich program theologically speaking. My understanding is that the program has recently been developed so it can be used in small group format, but I would recommend gender-specific groups. Here's a link:

~ AS BILL SEES IT ~ (The A.A. Way of Life, Selected Writings of A.A.’s Co-founder) ~

~ Page 126 ~

"Admitted to God . . ."

Provided you hold back nothing in taking the Fifth Step, your sense of relief will mount from minute to minute. The dammed-up emotions of years break out of their confinement, and miraculously vanish as soon as they are exposed. As the pain subsides, a healing tranquillity takes its place. And when humility and serenity are so combined, something else of great moment is apt to occur.

Many an A.A., once agnostic or atheist, tells us that it was during this stage of Step Five that he first actually felt the presence of God. And even those who already had faith often become conscious of God as they never were before.
