Have you tried studying the scriptures yourself yet? Find a good cross reference bible, or download a free bible program off the net called e-sword or bibleonline, they have great reference tools. Type words into 'search' and read the scriptures around those words in their context. You can find passages in scripture that line up with each other and cross reference to other passages. They will also give you the original meanings of words in the Hebrew and Greek from Strong's Concordance. It's amazing what you'll find.

What I am not sure on is what the new earth is for. I am leaning towards a belief God will put us to work in the new world and we will dwell in heaven.

Work is supposed to be a good thing.

Genisis 2:15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

This was before the fall. God gave men the ability and desire to create. Not create in the same sense that He did, but to create in using our imaginations and apply to the world around us the God made for us. If you equate the word work in this sense with play that makes Jesus' teaching about Sabbath keeping very clear.

Mark 2:27-28 Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

In other words you can work (play) for 6 days but you need to rest on the seveth day so you dont get burned out.
