  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is there anyone out there who is going to Seminary right now? I haven't told anyone this, but I am considering going to seminary so I can work for God in prisons or juvenile delinquency centers.

I am wondering where you go, why you are going, what your plans after seminary are, and any information you think might help me. Thanks in advance and God Bless!

I might go to Seminary later in life when I'm further along in my own personal journey. I think it's great that you feel called to that rewarding and difficult ministry! amazing dream :)
I hope you do go!

My college is next door to a wonderful seminary: Western Theological Seminary I know a most amazing person in admissions (he just loves to talk to people about their calling and dreams and where they might fit best in a seminary setting) and one of the professors of preaching (a favorite person in my life. used to be head chaplain of Hope College where I go).

I recommend paying attention to a few key things (of course there are more):
Size- how much personal contact and attention will a student receive from a professor? Is there a social atmosphere in the seminary? What activities are available?

Denominationalism- what belief structure is taught/stressed in each seminary? Would it be better to go to one inside your current denomination? Would it be better to go to a rather non-denominational focused seminary? What are the benefits of each?

Internships/experience- How involved are the students in working hands-on in local churches or organizations? Is this required?

Maybe someday I'll attend a seminary. It's just not my time right now.

I am at a UK Seminary at the moment - well it's more of a Bible College - Seminary i guess is the American word for Bible College.

Why did i go there?
God has really worked and had his sovereign plan in my life. i didnt want to go to Bible College 2 years ago when i started. I basically didn't have many other options and was going through a hard time, and one of my friends was at this particular Bible College and told me that i should think about studying there instead. so i thought "why not? - i can learn more about God and get a degree at the end of it". I didn't go there because i wanted to do mission/church work. but over the last few months God has really changed me, and i am now seriously thinking about doing cross-cultural mission work abroad! i can now see why God sent me here in the first place.

So right now, my plans after i graduate are unclear. i think that immediately after graduating that i would like to go to secular university for a year and get a Masters degree - but mainly so that i can mix with non-christians and witness to them and also get involved in the Christian Union and stuff there. After that i don't know - hopefully mission work - but i'm in God's hands.

As for any info/advice, you should really think about what kind of prgramme/degree you would like to study that would be appropriate to what you want to do afterwards. What i mean is that some colleges do different Theological degrees - like Applied Theology - which is more of the practical side, or plain Theology which is more of the academic side, but also has some practical stuff.

Also, the size is important. do you want to go to a big college, or a small one? i guess money is an issue too - over here in the UK it is quite expensive to go to Bible College. i cant think of anything else right now, but if you've got any questions feel free to ask, although i am aware that the whole UK system is probably very different to the system in the States :)

God bless

I go to an undergrad school of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. I plan on getting my Masters after I get a B.S. I'm going for missions, and when I attend the Missions School for Masters work, I'll be under the 2+2 program where I'm plugged overseas while learning through correspondence.
