  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Any religion... better?

I was reading through some various threads and I noticed how many people said something along the lines of... "our religion is better" or "the world is getting better with the spread of our religion".

Now, I wonder about this alot: is one religion really better than another?

All religions have their doctrinal flaws and not to mention all religions have people who have done terrible things in the name of that religion. Each religion teaches something good and something bad, and you can almost always find something you personally disagree with.

This includes non-religions.

So I'm asking you now: do you think your or any other religion is better than the others? And if the answer is yes: Why?

Also, what do you think about people who believe their religion is better than others?

Please be respectful.

There is no universal better. What is good for one person may not be good for another; different religions suit different people. Therefore if somebody talks along the lines of 'my religion is better', then I think they do it in fear of being wrong about their religion. It's more of a ploy by the subconcious to trick the brain into believing in that religion more strongly. My opinion of course.

The problem you have in asking this question is everyone's widely divergent ideas about what consitutes "better." Naturally, every religious person should expectedly believe that his or her religion is "better" than the rest. If he or she truly thought that another religion was "better" than his/her own, then I would expect that this hypothetical person would soon become an adherent of that perceived "better" religion.

True. But what I mean is... do you think that your religion deserves more respect than others or should be held to a higher degree than others?

I don't think any religion is correct, so as far as 'better' goes, I'd go for the one that has the best societal effects (or the least bad societal effects). Which means probably Buddhism (certainly not any of the monotheistic religions - history has demonstrated that their societal effects are very bad indeed).

As far as giving respect goes, I think all religions should be granted respect in that people have a right to believe in them, and we should all respect that right. But I don't think we should respect the beliefs themselves. If a believe is whacky we shouldn't be afraid to say so, whether it's a religion or not.

I cant think of one true Christian following the way of Christ who has done somethig horrible in the name of Christianity.

Yea, but every one of those "Christians" that did those bad things will tell you that they were a true Christian and following the ways of Christ. Matter of fact, they'ld probably tell you that you were a bad Christian.

I couldn't agree more.

no religion is better than the other (or non religion), just like no person is really better than another.

Whatever we beleve we are all human beings and should treat each other equally and with respect.

Personally i may not agree with what another person beleves (say if it is in a God or spirit) but i can respect that beleif (but maybe not their practices - ie: burning children etc! )

I beleive people should have freedom to express their beliefs to a point (see what i said above) without infringing on other peoples rights.

Sorry, but I'll have to call the no true scotsman fallacy on this argument.

I suppose you could call that statement a fallacy. But it seems pretty obvious that the theme of the Bible, especially the NT, is love. So anyone who actually wanted to be a Christian with all of their heart would have to pick up a Bible once a year...right? I think, Hitler claimed to be Christian. Ahem. And it is not enough that they just pick up a Bible and read what sounds good to them. It's that they take all of the word and apply it to their lives. Dont you think?
