My son and I heard them in Phoenix last year. Ian Anderson still can play a flute on one foot!

Great band! I was way into Tull back in college (early/mid-90s), I still dig them and give their records a spin every now and then. Thick as a Brick is easily my favorite album of theirs, closely followed by the Bursting Out live album.

Songs From The Wood (1977) is my favorite album by Jethro Tull. Although I was there primarily to see Emerson, Lake & Palmer, I got to see Jethro Tull live way back in 1996.

What a great show that must have been. I saw ELP in '74 on the BSS tour, and I've seen Tull a couple of times, but that would have been something to see them both on the same day. Very cool.

OH WOW! As a life-long ELP fan, I would give anything to have seen them on the Brain Salad Surgery tour in 1973/74. Did they have the quadraphonic PA system where you saw them?

Yes. They had the quadraphonic PA on that tour. I saw them in a huge hall in Frankfurt, Germany. The quad sound was best used during the climax/ending of "Karn Evil 9", the part where the synth is taking over the world and the mix swirls around and around like a merry-go-round. It was just the second concert I ever attended, so I was pretty awe struck.

Yep, that would have been so cool to see. I wear out my copy of Welcome Back My Friends... and the clips that remain from the California Jam '74 performance. Here is a video clip of Karn Evil 9: Third Impression, complete with the Moog explosion at CalJam.

Thanks so much for the clip. I had not seen that since it aired on US TV in the summer of '74. As great as that was, I think the coolest thing they did at California Jam was hooking Keith up to that grand piano that went spinning in the air while he played. I remember being quite impressed when I saw that. Didn't mean to hijack a thread on Jethro Tull with all this talk about ELP!

I may want to start listening to Jethro Tull. Which albums should I start with?

The band has produced many albums over a forty-year career. What have you listened to so far and what about their sound do you like?

I actually have never listened to any of their albums so far, but I may want to start listening to them, because they seem like they may be an interesting band.

If I had to do so, I would recommend the albums Aqualung (1971) and Songs from the Wood (1977).

These two albums contain everything that is classic Jethro Tull: bluesy elements, progressive elements, and folk elements. Most of their other albums tend to gravitate towards more of one feature than the others. These two that I recommend include all of the elements somewhat equally.
