Ad-Aware is free and most excellent. Download the free version, install it, use the Update feature to make sure your definitions are current. Then run it and delete the adware/spyware it finds.

To keep it off your machine, stop using Internet Explorer. Start using Firefox with the AdBlock extension and you'll rarely get adware or spyware again.

All those listed above are greaat programs. i have two friends that got spyware and those programs wouldnt fix it.

They installed avg (the free version) and it found those problems and fixed them. The problems were continous popups and Internet explorer kept closing and wanted to report the eror though he had the option of reporting erors turned off.

Though not freeware, Spyware Doctor is consistently rated either 1 or 2 with Spy Sweeper (both are $29 US for a years protection). I myself use Spyware Doctor as well as freeware Spybot and Ad-Aware. Unlike AV programs, you can never have too many antispyware programs - just in case one misses something when scanning. ;)

Just to note, some spyware programs conflict. they lock onto checking each other endlessly and greatly slow down the computer, even almost to a standstill.
The best program that i have found, and greatly comprehensive is panda. They regularly have sales for one or two days, and that is when it is best to buy, otherwise it is quite expensive. I enjoy the titanium version. You can eliminate all other computer protections with it.

I'd just like to say, the NEW, FREE, OPERA BROWSER (just came out last week i'm told) is sumthin else ! It makes the old browsers look like antiques. It takes time to realise the abundant features, but WOW, i'm impressed !
Thanks for the heads up !

I also use the spywareblaster/ad aware/spybot combo. There is another program I'd recommend for the not so faint of heart. One called HJT(hijack this) It is more useful in helping remove stuff from your pc. NOT to be used lightly.

Just as an aside, most AV proggies these days have a limited antispyware cpability built in as well, though I'd not readily trust my computer to any one of them.
