Any free Audio Production software?

What's the best free software out there for composing music/sounds on the computer? Something that may work really good for making (quite bizarre) ambient drone music/sounds. Something fairly flexible and complexity is fine.

Try (AcidXpress) http://www.acidplanet.com/ I don't know how well it works myself but it's free. I use Reason 3.0 myself. Wouldn't dream of using anything else in it's place.
