Any Ella Fans?

I really fell in love with music as a kid cause my parents would always play music in the house and in the car. Thats why when I was interning at UMGD and my good friend played Ella Fitzgerald I totally had memories of childhood. I really have not listened to older music so its going to be cool to hear a tribute album to Ella. Im totally looking fwd to it. I mean she even has a myspace dedicated to it now. See 4 yourself

The single finest vocalist of the 20th century. A flawless voice; a little high and girlish and capable of angelic purity (but with the capability to moan low, too). Her absolute peak was 56-65, during which she was signed to Verve, a label her manager launched largely for her sake. His idea was to record with Ella, a series of LPs patterned after the revolutionary series of long-players SZinatra was creating at Capitol records during his own peak period. With a few tweaks.

One of those tweaks - a series of 8 projects, mostly double- and even triple-lps, each devoted to the work of a single major songwriter - has since become legendary as the Ella Fitzgerald Songbooks. But the one-off albums she recorded for Verve in between the Songbook chapters are often just as good.

Seriously, until you hear Ella sing "Close Your Eyes", or "Willow Weep For Me", or "Embraceable You", you won't understand the meaning of the word sublime. Just stick to something on Verve, released within those years, and you literally can't go wrong.

The complete Songbook collection is an expensive but amazing boxed set. You could do worse than to start off with the single-disc Best of the Songbooks collection, add Swings Gently with Nelson, then go from there.

I'm probably the only person I know who thinks Live in Berlin is overrated, though. She flubs in a big way and pulls off some nice scatting, which could have been charming, but the set is really uneven, I think, and that part doesn't help.

I love Ellas there will never be another like her.

I was forutnate enough to see her in person in Seattle, she was with Count Basie and Oscar Peterson. It was awesome, the audience went wild.

I'm SO envious of you! Ella #1!!!
It was terrific, I must admit. I am so glad I had the chance that time, she never came back to Seattle and she died not too long afterwards.
