  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We have 13 birds of varying varities.
2 Budgies
2 Finchs
7 Cockatiels
1 Green Cheek Conure
1 Quaker

We have a lot of fun with them. Each one has his or her own unique personality and most of them spend their days outside the cage so there is always something going on.

Here is one of my favorite pictures. This is Simon (the Quaker) taking a bath.

Beautiful Budgie Nicci. I think Budgies are so cool. We got ours when they were already full grown and not tamed so the relationship aspect isn't there and they stay caged. I wish we could let them fly about the house like our other birds do but they are so small and wild. They would get hurt or get out the door. I love to listen to them chatter back and forth at each other.

Two of our Cockateils recently mated and successfully raised 1 chic. I'll include a couple more pics of them. The fist is Piper (mom) and Spike (baby) at 1 day old. The second is mom and baby at about 2 weeks. They grow so very fast!

We have cockatiel called Charlie.. he sings like a jolly workman. His mate died last year because of an egg laying problem. she was beautiful. He is fine out of his cage but terrorises our dog. One time we were out for several hours and left our dog home alone for several hours ( very rare we do that ) but I though he'd be just fine. When we got home he looked terrorised! Then we saw Charlie had escaped out of his cage and was sitting on the doggie bean bag and hissing at our poor dog. I'm sure Charlie knew it was the dog bed too!

We also have a large cage with 4 budgies. We don't let them out though cos they were all too old to tame when we got them ( except Peter who is part tame ) but I think they are colony birds so gain more pleasure naturally interacting with each other. They are very funny and have different personalities.

We have had birds for over 15 years now.

We have two coackatiels, one is totally hand tamed and I'm his favorite in the house and he used to go insane when I left but we got him over that. The other one is hand tamed but has a tendancy to gnaw on u case he isn't as good as the one we brought up. We pout them outside cause they mien was getting to spoilt and was startign to bite. when he got this way we used to have to get a tea towel grab him and calm him down and oen time the tea towel dropped behidn the bird and the bird went on the floor and he's full on goign to attack us so I jump over but he's to quick and I do a barrel rolll over the couch before he gets me. He is much better behaved now thank god!

I have 2 parakeets but I don't feel very close to them. They wont let me hold them. I have 2 cats so I can't let them out freely. The first one I got, I found in my back yard. Someone lost him or set him free. I put an ad in the paper, it's free for 4 days for lost pets. Nobody claimed him. After a while I thought he'd like a cage mate and I went and bought one from the pet store.
The one I caught, Pari, seemed to be almost hand trained. I can get him on my finger but he quickly hops off. The one from the store, Kari, just freaks out whenever I need to put my hand in there. Although, she (not sure on genders, just guessing) has gotten better about me just changing the food and water daily.
They can get SO loud that sometimes I think about finding them new homes, but then I come to my senses later. I only wish I could spend more time with them and teach them to trust me and get hand trained. Then I could at least lock the cats up for a while and let them out.

We have 1 budgie that thinks he's human. We got him pretty young, and he's pretty attached to us (as we are him). My mom originally got it to replace me when I went off to college, and he's done a splendid job! Sometimes Mom cares more about him than me or her own granddaughter (which is hilarious!).

We've ignored all the parakeet owner rules, so this bird not only eats off our plates, but drinks our sodas, and walks/runs on the floor. As a matter of fact, last October, Chica (it was so young when we got it, its sex couldn't be determined--he was about five months old at this point) was stepped on by my father when he came home for lunch and sat down at the kitchen table (Chica was playing underneath). The bird wasn't supposed to live, but my mother cared for it, and now he's more trouble than he ever was before. He's our little miracle!

TugOwar and Nicci - those pictures are adorable!

Crofter I'm sorry to hear about Charlies mate. Egg binding is a problem sometimes. If you can catch it soon enough a little bit of light mineral oil rubbed around her vent can help. Also seperate an egg bound female from other birds and isolate her in a warm, dark place. Let her spend some time in a high humidity area (steamy bathroom), this can also help her pass the egg.

Charlie sounds like a real trip. Did he act differently when his mate died?

Kira Faye I'm glad to hear your Tiel is behaving better, did you bring them back inside?

Oblivious your Quaker Parakeet should be the same as the bird in my first post above. Simon is a great talker.

Mom that's very cool that you found the one keet, how in the world did you catch him?
Male budgies have a blue'ish coloring around heir nairs (nostrils). Females can have any color exept blue'ish, usually pinkish. One way to sex birds is to feel the width of their pelvic bone. Females have a wider pelvic bone than male, obviously for passing eggs. Even that isn't 100% sure. The only 100% sure way to sex is DNA testing which is expsnsive.

eutychus, Chica sounds like our Cockatiels. Every time I sit down to eat I can count on at least 3 tiels as lunch mates. lol
Glad he survived too. Sounds like he's loads of fun.

This pic is of Sammy lying in my hand. He is a Green Cheek Conure. They are widely known to be "very big personalities in a small bird". And Sammy is no exception. He likes to bite so We are working on re-training him but it's a slow process. We love him though and could never think of letting him go.

Yep... we did all that... saved her life a few times... she laid eggs persistently for several years. We tried everything. She was only 8 when she died. Charlie was distraught... in fact it was such a bereavement for him we never had time to think about our own loss. Our pain was so much for him. We considered getting a new mate... but these birds mate for life and there was no guarantee this would work for him. We moved the cage around and changed his toys and perches and gave him mirrors etc... and spent time with him waited out his sadness.. because he was inconsolable. It became problematic living with him because he screeched and screeched... but we kept up our efforts for going on two months. Then one day he began to sing again. And now he is his merry old self now...

You sound like a fantastic, knowledgable bird owner Crofter. Kudos to you for being so patient with Charlie. I'm glad he recovered.
Birds are such cool pets and can be very loving and affectionate when they are allowed to be. I often get agrivated with our tiels because of the noise and mess and having to share all my meals lol But when it's all said and done I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hmm, I used to have a masked lovebird called Baby... her picture is below. *misses her*

And in the past we've had cockatiels and zebra finches. Oh, and doves.

There's a sweet quaker parrot at PetSmart that I would love to have... I have a big cage for it and everything. But... too expensive. :(

Beautiful LoveBird Dawn.

We have a Quaker, not quite 1 year old. Be sure to read up on Quakers before you purchase. They can be quite loud and mischevious, but they are very intelligent and good talkers. Our Quaker, Simon can say:
I love you
Gimme kiss kiss
it's ok baby or sweetheart
Good morning
go nite nite
be good boy
uh oh
Wheres mama, wheres daddy, wheres Simon
peeka boo
quack quack quack, Ima duck
Probably more I can't remember at the moment

Sometimes when he is bored he entertains himself by repeating all the words he knows over and over and over. ;)

I am listenig to "Squishy Ramone" as I type. He is a cockatiel that found me. About a month ago, he was sitting on the wire in my backyard. I called to him, and he came right over and landed on my shoulder. It was a hoot to wake up my son and ask him to get the bird off my back :D
I watched the papers and looked for signs. It had been REALLY windy so who knows where he came from. I am very glad to have him though. I LOVE to listen to him sing.

I actually got my budgie as an adult...it took awhile, but he's very tame now. I keep his wings clipped because I'm incredibly paranoid and I've actually had dreams about him somehow getting outside and flying away, or flying up the chimney and getting stuck....I just feel better with him having clipped wings. He can fly well enough to get to where he wants to go, but he can't gain altitude very well. He spends every moment that I'm at home, out of his cage. He usually starts out on my shoulder, but then he just HAS to investigate my hair, and he inevitable gets tangled up, and after I detangle him he crawls down the back of my shirt, and when I remove him from my shirt he just HAS to go see the fish, not realizing that the poor fish don't like it when he sticks his beak up against the tank and screams "hello? hello? hello?" over and over and over and over and over.........so I get him away from the fish and he promptly leaps out of my hands and manages to glide right into whatever leftover dishes I have on the table (I'm really bad about doing dishes) so he has to get a bath and then he wants his veggies, but he decides that, instead of EATING them he has to pick all the peas out and roll in them, smushing them into his pretty blue feathers, and then he gets really agitated when I catch him, knowing he's got to get yet another bath......he's exhausting but I love every minute of it.

When I first got him, he wanted nothing to do with me. He would draw blood everytime he bit me (his beak IS small, but it still can hurt when he wants it to). He screamed nonstop. He had a horrendous diet...NOTHING but seeds. He wouldn't touch pellets, veggies, or anything. I finally got him to start eating pellets, so now that's his main staple but he's offered veggies twice a day, and he usually gets some fruit once a day. He talks nonstop....he says "hello", "uh-huh", "yeah", and when he sneezes he tells himself "bless you". Or if he hears someone else sneeze, he'll tell them "bless you" (after he imitates them sneezing, of course).

Nicci, that sounds like a really cute Parakeet you have there. I have one Parakeet that I bought about 2 weeks ago in my apartment. I also have a Cockatiel and an English Parakeet that live at my Grandma's house. Those two are mine. My Grandma owns 4 (I think it's 4) Zebra Finches. My Mom owns a Quaker parrot. The Quaker is so adorable! He is about 5 or 6 years old and he says quite a few words. I'm pretty sure he is still learning though. He'll probably learn more words throughout his life. I think I read somewhere that the average life of a Quaker is around 70 years old.

I am just new here and i just joined last night. (I am not sure how old this question is),but I have a Sengal parrot. Echo is a female and is 10 years old. She was an abused bird that I received from the Lord. I prayed for a bird, and He gave me a parrot. She is very smart, intelligent and brillant wrapped up in one. She talks all the time. Funny- she says Good morning in the evening. She drinks water from my cup, sits on my shoulder,is hand fed alot, gets up on the perch with the UP command, flys around the house and listens to all her commands. I absolutely just love this bird.;)
