Hi all,

Are there any verses that I can study in regards to disability and the struggles? I'm autistic/ADHD.

I understand it's a sin to be lazy, but some days can be very difficult and my productivity levels are low especially as a Mother. I pray daily to God for guidance and to thank Him for allowing me to have so many things to be grateful for. But there are days when I'm unable it make it out of bed. Every day is different and up and down due to this.

Is there anyone who has gone through anything similar or any verses I should read?

Thank you and God Bless.

Many of us have disabilities and struggles. What is laziness for one is not for another. You yourself know inside of you what was a lazy day vs what was a day of struggle-for you. It doesn't matter what the person next door does they are not you. A marathon runner might consider an hour of exercise to be a lazy day, meanwhile someone with a debilitating condition walking at all might be an accomplishment. Don't compare. Whatever God has given us is for purpose. Even if this purpose is to strengthen our faith and to talk to others because we can emphasis with their struggles.

A few verses.

2 Corinthians 12:9 My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

Philippians 4:11-13 Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

Joshua 1:9 Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18
16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Romans 8:18
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

1 Corinthians 1:26-29
For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.

Welcome to CF.
This may help....

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Maybe see if you can find a Bible commentary which looks at things through a disability lens? There are several out there, although they're usually not cheap, and if you can get them through a library that might be the way to go!

First of all don't feel condemned about this, it's alright to live within your limitations. I am disabled as well, it's a different sort of disability, but it's still a disability and I have to live within my own limitations. I have have a fairly disabling stroke! The stroke was caused by a blood clot in the left hand side of my brain and has reduced my use of my right hand side as a direct result. I had a lot of physiotherapy at the time as I needed to learn to walk again, to talk properly again, to write again and to spell again. My driving licence was revoked and after I had learning to use my muscles again I started having lessons to drive again using an adapted car. This took a very long time to do this and I praise God that I now have been issued again with a full driving licence which allows me to drive a vehicle with specific adaptions.

Don't write your self off! Believe me that God can show you the things which you can become better at and also the things which are too much for you. Knock you're self about for no worthwhile result, or improvement will not help you, or me, but life's little victories can help lift the spirit and help to gives us more self worth, which is not to be under estimated. I have good days and bad days, maybe it's the same for you. That's not easy, but it's a learning thing! Learn what it is o.k. to cope with on bad days and what it it not. If it's not beneficial to push your self to much on bad days, it's better to set your self some limits and not suffer unnecesserily as a result of knocking you're self back and causing problen for you're self on good days, which follow the bad days.

In the bible David needed to encourage himself in the Lord. Guess what? There is no explaination is the bible how to do this, ask Him for encouragement and strength, or what ever you need him to do for you. I assume that you probably know that the bible says that the lord inhabits the praises of his people. Praising the Lord is a good way to come into his presence and in His presence is fullness of joy.

And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God. (1 Samuel 30:6)

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. (Psalm 16:11)

It helps me to tell myself to trust in Him, in every situation, or need. I might sound like a strong Christian, but I know that I am weak. He is the strong one and I need to draw strength in Him.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

It's alright to feel weak at times. I talk to my self and tell myself to be strong in the Lord. I find that it helps me, perhaps you will find the same! I don't know how much of this you are likely to find helpful, but I hoping that you will find at least some small piece will be in some way helpful.

Hi Lulu. I have Asperger's syndrome. Are you closer to the top or bottom of the autistic spectrum?

2 Corinthians 12 is not specific to disabilities, but autism falls under weaknesses in general. The is the NIV text:

6 Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, 7 or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Wow, I am absolutely floored by this reply, thank you so much for sharing this with me. You certainly are a warrior! Yes, I find so much strength in Him, it really helps on those bad/difficult days you speak of. Talking and praying to the Lord and just being thankful really helps renew my spirit and to continue in my journey. I'm going to reflect on this message, thank you again and God Bless.

If you knew me, I think that you might not say that I am a warrior! I am not that strong. Health wise I am quite weak, but the alternative to being weak and fearful is to stand on His word and To trust in Him, in both good times and bad times. I have been very ill and staring the posibility of death in the face and that does something to you. Believe me, it takes a lot for the weak to say I am strong. You don't know how strong you are, until you have been brought to you're limits and still survived.

Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong. Joel (3:10)

It is not me who is strong, but the eternal God is my refuge, and underneath me are the everlasting arms.

The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them. (Deuteronomy 33:27)

Wow isn't that some promise!

When I had first become a Christian I when around various second hand christian books shops and gradually collecting various volumes of many different bible commentary, but in time I came to realise that it's not bible commentries that you need, but it is much better just to read your bible. I still have two bible commentaries, which I have kept, but I only refer to them very ocassionally. These are the full five volume set of the Matthew Henry commentary and also Joseph Exell's Biblical Illustrator. The Biblical Illustrator is just stuffed full of quotations from people like the puritans. The puritans were often quite calvinistic, which I am not particularly myself, but there's some good stuff there!

It pays to be picky when I come to commentaries. There a lot of stuff out there which sounds good, but is largely empty words. I can't speak for anyone else, but having suffered with health problems most of my life, I don't need a commentary for the disabled, although I am weak and disabled, I need one for those who want to be strong and to stand on His word. It is for me not to focus on my weaknesses, but to be strong in Him. I need to avoid negativity, because that will only cause me to lose heart, yes it is more easy for me to do that than you probably realise. Trusting in Him and thinking strong is what it is all about for me!

I am not suggesting a commentary "for the disabled," as though they were a special class of people who need a different message. I suggested a commentary which looks at Scripture through a disability lens, which is of benefit to people of all sorts of abilities.

Aspergers can produce higher levels of anxiety which can act to inhibit an inclination to tackle certain tasks. There are tactics to manage this such as giving yourself periodic breaks, scheduling tasks so that they loom less large in the mind, and having backup plans so that surprise situations produce less stress.

Here is a link to a free pdf booklet about Aspergers that may be of help;

Every day is different and up and down due to this.

Thank you and God Bless.

Life constantly confronts us with things that are beyond us, things that would overwhelm us and drive us into darkness, far from God. But God says to us in His word that we can do all things - even get out of bed when it seems impossible - through His power.

Philippians 4:13
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Ephesians 3:16
16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

Philippians 2:13
13 For it is God who works in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

When His children place themselves under His control, yielding themselves to Him throughout each day, God moves in them to be the people He made them to be: strong, righteous, faithful, loving, and truth-filled - and productive.

1 Peter 5:6
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Romans 12:1
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Romans 8:12-14
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if you live after the flesh, you shall die: but if you through the Spirit do put to death the deeds of the body, you shall live.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the children of God.

James 4:7
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God...

When you have a day of effort in front of you and you can't get motivated to enter it, wanting instead to remain in bed, this is the time to submit yourself to God, yield yourself to Him as a living sacrifice, surrender yourself to His will and way, and then, by faith, trust Him to move you out of bed and productively into the day. And so long as the impulse to remain abed confronts you, surrender again to God, continuing to trust that He will see the submission of your heart and fulfill His promises to you to strengthen and sustain you.

When we know to do good and don't do it, we sin.

James 4:17
17 Therefore to him who knows to do good, and doesn't do it, to him it is sin.

Sin, God has promised, always leads us to death of some kind.

Romans 6:23
23 For the wages of sin is death...

Galatians 6:7-8
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a person sows, that shall they also reap.
8 For the person who sows to their flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption...

James 1:14-15
14 But every person is tempted, when they are drawn away of their own lust, and enticed.
15 Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.

The first "death" we always suffer when we don't do what we should is the death of our fellowship with God. We can't enjoy Him when we step out from under His control and serve ourselves rather than His will and way. And when we are out of fellowship with God, His joy, peace, power and presence all diminish in our lives. What's more, His transformation of us halts. Until we place ourselves freely under His Lordship again, He will not change us. God does not force us to be who He wants us to be, ignoring our choices and compelling us into His mold whatever we might want. No, He waits 'til we submit to Him and in so doing express to Him our willingness to be changed by Him and then He goes to work on us, remaking us into godly, stable, strong, loving, holy vessels for His use.

So, every time you remain in bed when you know you should rise and tend to the needs of your household, if you spend the day among your blankets and pillows when you are able to get up and be productive, you don't honor and obey your Heavenly Father and this halts your fellowship with Him. You have stepped into rebellion, you see, the moment you choose your way rather than His. And so long as you remain in rebellion to God, your enjoyment of Him stops, His power ceases to flow into your life, and you pause His transformation of you into a "fruitful branch."

Other kinds of "death" flow out of this halted fellowship with God. When God isn't in control of us, we begin to make more and more bad choices, we start to migrate into sinful living with increasing speed; moving away from God and the Light that He is, our thinking and desires start to darken and we choose things - thoughts, feelings and actions - that in the moment might feel good but bring us terrible trouble and pain down the road. Consider the story of Esau and the Bowl of Stew.

This was so beautifully stated. Also Dont worry OP. You didnt choose any of your diagnoses so you arent suffering for stupidity's sake. I believe whatever suffering you endure is due to righteousness.

Now concerning your problem I think you should get help from.a friend or family member of someone that works with the disabled to help you with daily life activities.

Beloved one, whatever your care, whether it concerns your disabilities and struggles as mother, cast your cares to the Lord, for He cares for you.

For we heard:
“casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
‭‭I Peter‬ ‭5:7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Beloved one, I would like to share my thoughts on productivity, may this encourage you. This is what I have written before:

I was among those who think highly of productivity. I worked in a factory for fifteen years ; I marched my days on this slogan.

However, after I came to the point of depression and devastation,I did not know what I can do beside looking to the Lord Jesus Christ for help.

As I was so spiritually weak, I cannot pray, read the Bible and go to church; I became somebody I did not like; who else would like me even I find myself annoying!

I was frustrated and devastated.

I just listen to the teaching: wait on God !
If you can wait for doctor, then you can wait for God too.

From waiting on God, gradually my life change God gives me His strength.

How about productivity?
When a person is in a desert experience or feeling low or lost, how he can be productive?

When God delivers me out of distress, I know His strength counts.

What I am trying to say is:
When a person say he or she is productive, that person rely on his or her own strength to achieve that productivity.

but when a person feels low or lost, that person’s productivity is no longer effective.

From my experience, God’s strength can invigorate me when I was exhausted; God’s strength can give me strength when I was powerless ( feeling low).

What I can sum up is that God’s strength is of importance for us not when we feel exhausted, powerless and weak.
Also, when we are at peace.

God’s strength can be a source of help for us in times of need.

The productivity equation cannot deny God’s strength is awesome.

The right way is not to rely on our strength for productivity but on God’s strength to gain abundant life.

As it is written in the Holy Scripture:

who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.-Psalm 103:4-5

I testify that God’s strength is true.

Embrace God’s strength for daily living
not on productivity, that, rely on your own strength.

With God’s strength, you can do the impossible.
Remember what Jesus said:

But Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." -Matthew 19:26

I declare God’s strength is of importance;

Ask the Holy Spirit to give us His strength from His glorious presence that we may live worthy of our Lord Jesus Christ, bearing fruit of righteousness and love that bring delights to the Heavenly Father and multiply our knowledge of His person and power.

Don’t forget to pray for we need God’s strength.
Hallelujah
Thank You Lord God that You bless us Your people with Your strength.
Amen

Matthew Chapter 5 'The Beatitudes' teach and give us comfort when life situations and 'time' may be wasted or taken away from us unjustly. Chapter 4 of Philippians there's a section which Paul talks about his weaknesses and strengths and how God help him deal with his personal problems through Christ. Psalm 119 is a long Psalm, but has lots of hopeful words for all who struggle but whom have hope by depending on Gods word. I hope this helps you. DL

Hi! I have schizoaffective disorder, which is like a mixture of schizophrenia and bipolar. Being disabled is actually a blessing for me, as I dont have to work and can spend all my time reading the bible, writing poetry, praying, and I can spend as much time with my family as I want. It seems to me that God has granted me freedom from work life to pursue time with Him and time with my family more.

You said you are a mother. You are free from the 9-to-5 work grind and can spend a lot of time with your children. Isn't that nice? :)

Dont worry about laziness. Being disabled like we are isn't laziness. My illness requires a low-stress lifestyle. Just make sure you find time to be with the Lord. Sometimes I feel like God used my disability to allow me to spend a lot of quality time with Him and my family.

Depends what you mean by "lazy".
For example monks shut themselves away in monasteries and nobody thinks of them as being lazy, they prefer that spiritual life so they can work at getting closer to God and Jesus-
Jesus said - "The work God requires is to believe in the one he has sent" (John 6:28 )
As a mother you've got work enough looking after your family, I'm a single man with no dependents and I envy you having somebody to look after..:)
