• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Antihistamines?

Last week I went to conference in Denver, and I found myself having trouble focusing on the talks there, but I felt really, really great the whole time, and it felt like reality was coming into better and better focus. But when I came back I started getting dizzy, consistently around 2pm. It came to me that I'd been taking some OTC antihistamines for my allergies, and that the reason I never felt tired when I had taken Zyrtec in college was because I always felt tired because I was depressed. So I stop taking the OTC stuff yesterday, and then I'm thrown into a dysthymic state, which I emerged from this afternoon. Along the way, I found a site this morning that warned that antihistamines could cause manic episodes.

Anybody else experienced this? I haven't had the chance to talk to my psychiatrist yet, but is it true that allergy meds can cause mania? It was only one site that I could find that reported this information.

I've been warned to stay away from decongestants for that reason. The pharmacist warned me, actually. Stuff like cold and flu OTC meds and the like can cause manic episodes (something to do with serotonin). Maybe your allergy med has a decongestant in it? I use chloro-triplon which doesn't have a decongestant in it... if anything it just makes me more tired.

Yes, antihistamines have a cross over effect to mood. I get depressed on them. I alos have issues with other H-2 blockers such as Zantac, prilosec that block histamine 2 receptors and help with stomach issues.

I went to a class and this issue was discussed and I had one of those AH HA moments!!!

I use purely Tums like antacids and natural supplements for my year round allergies. I also have a mild steroid nasal inhalers (as we have to be very careful of steroids as well, they will send your mood way out of whack!). I use the inhaler only when I have to. For colds I do use sudafed containing products but not antihistamines of any sort like benadryl etc.
