Does anybody here know the origin and meaning of this word? I was watching Jeopardy! yesterday and this word came up in the category, Really Long Words (I think). Anyhow, anybody here know? Here's the word again:

Antidisestablishmentarianism

A belief against establishments? :p

I think the fellowship forum would be a better place than this.
I just can't imagine what Jeopardy, origins and meanings of long confusing words, and not being able to use sources like a dictionary have to do with "Christian Theology".

No. It's relevant to this forum. You'll see that when someone defines it for us. I'll give it some time before I reveal it. :)

In some ways, it is a theological question: is it appropriate to have an Established Church in a country, with the duty of ministering to the needs of all the people (who do not choose to go elsewhere) and the support of the government in doing so? Debate was hot on this in the U.K. in the 19th century.

Indeed. The term was coined by those opposed to removing the official state status of the Church of England. It certainly has broader meaning now - but that was the genesis of the word, as it were.

I learned how to spell this word in 5th grade. It wasn't a word that we had to learn or be tested on. I was just in our spelling books with a little trivia about it. But, the actual meaning was not given. It is the longest non-medical, english word that has a legitimate definition. It has 28 letters.

A fun game would be to see how many words you can find in disestablishmentarianism . . .

arian
trite
blatant

*takes a sip of coffee*

My guess is that you have a deeper intent than my fun game . . . :D

God Bless

No. Not really. I was just kind of curious as to whether or not anybody knew what it meant. I figured Catholics and Orthodox most likely would.

The question on Jeopardy was which church inspired or sparked this "movement." I took a wild guess and said arianism. I know its not a church per se, but I did see the word "arianism" within the word. So . . . .

I din't look and, hence, will get atleast part of this wrong (its obscure)

disestablishmentainism was a polictical movement (in France if memory serves) that was against the movement to establish a parlimentary goverment to balance the monarchy.

Antidisestablishmentarianism was the movement against to movement of disestablishmentarisnism but was different for the original monarchist.

OK ?

My son recently asked me what it meant and I looked it up then.

It wasn't France. It was England.

It was not about the King, it was about the Church of England.

It was a political movement though.

If you know that, and break the words down, you can probably figure out the meaning.

Ok, then it had be be about combining religious and state power, making the head of state and head of the chruch them same.

Anti -disestablishmentiarism probably is the movement to keep the state chruch the state church.

Hey, I was close, that's sort of where I was going
