  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can i ask why you thought antidepressants might be bad then, since you wouldn't ask the question if there wasn't a part of you that thought they were bad.
I'm trying to decide whether to get on them again or not, so yes, there is a part of me that is against it. I was on them before, it helped, but I felt slave to it to depend on a pill to make me feel good. Depression isn't like a flu treatment or chemotherapy. Most of those who go through depression are going through something or have been through something. Medicine is a world's answer to a problem people should be able to handle. Whether it is through God, or mind over matter...

If they helped you, I would suggest that you get back on them. I would also suggest going into some form of therapy (if you are uncomfortable with the idea, remember that there are some nice Christian therapists, or you could talk with your minister or someone) if you aren't already.

Depression isn't a problem that everyone can handle on their own. God understands if you need some help! Don't feel bad if you have to take medication, because it just means that you are strong enough to know when you need to ask for help, and brave enough to take that help when you need it!

With all due respect then, i think you're better off asking an expert about this, as you'll find a ton of armchair doctors on here giving bad advice. For what its worth, i see no problem with antidepressants, and if you have to pop a pill every day for the rest of your life, and it makes you feel happier with no ill side effects, then i see no problem with this whatsoever.

Lily, I think you misunderstand what depression and other mental health disorders really are.

Let's use me as an example. My life is what most people would consider wonderful. Heck, even I consider it wonderful. I have a job I enjoy, wonderful kids who do well in school and are active in Church, a husband who loves me for who I am, and treats me like a princess, a decent roof over my head, nice car, some money in the bank and many toys to play with.

Yet almost every morning, before anti-depressants, I would wake up and have to force myself through my day. I still can't be in a place with more than a few people without feeling like I could die at any moment. I obsess over the smallest things, and I used to cry myself to sleep every night.

There may be people who can just "get over it". But depression is a serious illness. It is a chemical imbalance. Yes, there are other ways to help, but there is nothing wrong with taking anti-depressants. You would not be a "slave" to the medication any more than you would be if you had to take medication for asthma, diabetes, blood pressure or any other chronic condition.

Get help now, while you know you need it. There may come a time where it could consume you to the point where you are unable to ask for the help you need.

I can understand that you feel uncomfortable with taking drugs.
Depression isn't like a flu treatment or chemotherapy.
Right, it´s more like flu or cancer.
But, actually, it´s not like flu, in that flu is likely to go away all by itself.

Most of those who go through depression are going through something or have been through something.
No. Depression can take hold of any of us. A severe clinical depression is usually not a response on your experiences.

Medicine is a world's answer to a problem people should be able to handle.
People should be able to handle a severe depression in the same way they should be able to handle a broken leg: they should seek professional help.
Medical treatments have their pros and cons, and they have their side effects. Even experts do not always agree on which treatment is the best in with which symptoms and in which situation. But they are far more knowledgeable and experienced than the posters on a message board, and - first of all - they will hopefully take the time to look closely at the particularities of you, your situation and your disease.
Whether it is through God, or mind over matter...
Findings of medical research are a form of "mind over matter". I wouldn´t know why not to look at them as god´s gifts.

If you feel you have some sort of moral obligation to endure this disease without seeking professional help, that´s up to you. Fortunately nobody can force you to accept help.

Yes, i agree. The post was tongue in cheek in response to thequite ridiculous question of whether antidepressants were bad. I was quite stunned anyone could even think they were bad on the whole.
Sorry, I didn't realise you were joking....I'm just a bit...super sensitive...about this subject because I know what I've been through in my life with mental illness, severe clinical depression in particular and I just want to scream at people who have never been through it, and yet think they know all about it..... I also know how I used to think about people with...so called...mental illness, before I became ill myself, and having the illness certainly jolts you into reality...

Smiles, Annie
