The Solemnity of the Holy Mother of God

115. On New Year's Day, the octave day of Christmas, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Holy Mother of God. The divine and virginal motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a singular salvific event: for Our Lady it was the foretaste and cause of her extraordinary glory; for us it is a source of grace and salvation because "through her we have received the Author of life"(127).

The solemnity of the 1 January, an eminently Marian feast, presents an excellent opportunity for liturgical piety to encounter popular piety: the first celebrates this event in a manner proper to it; the second, when duly catechised, lends joy and happiness to the various expressions of praise offered to Our Lady on the birth of her divine Son, to deepen our understanding of many prayers, beginning with that which says: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us, sinners".

116. In the West, 1 January is an inaugural day marking the beginning of the civil year. The faithful are also involved in the celebrations for the beginning of the new year and exchange "new year" greetings. However, they should try to lend a Christian understanding to this custom making of these greetings an expression of popular piety. The faithful, naturally, realize that the "new year" is placed under the patronage of the Lord, and in exchanging new year greetings they implicitly and explicitly place the New Year under the Lord's dominion, since to him belongs all time (cf. Ap 1, 8; 22,13)(128).

About four or five years ago, a dear relative was going through some really hard times. She was very depressed after her only parent had had a stroke and ended up in a rest home, and showed signs of being suicidal. Back then, and for most of my life, I'd never really been in the habit of praying outside of church or grace before meals. When I did pray, it was usually a quick "Our Father" or "Hail Mary" muttered in one breath, the way a child spells out M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I. However, one day I was thinking about her, and got the urge to get down on my knees. I began to pray like crazy, begging God to end the pain she was feeling and to get her past the crisis (I had a sense that things were building to a head), that I wanted her to pass through this period of pain soon, and safely, but "as in all things, by Thy Will be it done." At the time, I didn't recognize that phrase as being similar to the line in the Our Father, "Thy will be done," but it seemed appropriate and important to say.

The next morning we received a phone call. She had cut one of her wrists the day before, a few hours after I felt called to prayer. However, before she could cut the other one, she realized how hurt her friends and family would be and came out to the living room to get help. She was taken to the hospital, got stitches, and was directed to therapy.

Later, we determined that this had happened only a few hours after I started praying. Thank You, God, for the special aid you gave her in that time of crisis and in the period following.

I did the 24 Glory Be Novena to St. Therese, and on the last day I saw a girl at my school with a bouquet of roses. And when I was living with my aunt for a while back in 2003, my dresser drawers smelt of roses (well I think they were roses), and at the time I didn't ask for St. Therese's intercession, or know who she was, until I read about her. She is my favorite Saint i'm taking her name for confirmation, because i'm being accepted into the Church at Easter Vigil.Therese had such and inspiring life and wonderful faith. Thank you St. Therese!

I dunno if this is really something, it happened so soon and is so obscure..but anyway..
I started praying for St. Therese's intercession. I read that for people who said the prayer for 5-9 days would see/smell/etc roses...so I thought that would be wonderful if I could ever receive a miracle (the praying statue post got me hooked again on that issue).
Well, today is just the second day I prayed that but it's also her Memorial Day I guess. And I've been asking for Mary's intercessions lately too. And anyway
one of my friends got really mad at me today for things I said. After I went to the chapel to pray about it, I went to eat. I got a fortune cookie, and the fortune said "the only rose without a thorn is friendship" So roses, advice on what I prayed
about....
Again, at this point I don't know..it just seem like a cheesy coincedence, but I pray that I'll be further blessed.

The prayers of my novena and special intentions of St Anthony that ended yesterday, Wednesday March 3, were granted.

I prayed that my former girlfriend Shane would have her heart opened to God. She listened to an audio book about the Blessed Mother and Medugorje written by Beverly Donofrio (Riding in Cars with Boys) as I prayed she would.

Perhaps there is a reconciliation in God's plan. I can only pray. If not, at least I know that I did not let her completely down. Once Our Lady turns you head, your head is forever turned. Praise God. Thank you St Anthony. Thank you Rosa Mystica.

I have had my prayers answered through saints intercession many times.

Just lots of little things, one of the biggest things was to have the courage to go to confession a while ago- when I basically hadn't been a Catholic for a few years and had some major regretted sins hanging on my mind. I remember how pleased I was after that- I walked home, in the rain from the Chruch crying with tears of joy.

It was a wonderful experience.

Mine wasn't really an "answered prayer" but it was a truely amazing experience. It happend just a couple of nights ago when I was praying in my room before bed with the intercession of St. Michael, and all of a sudden I just felt as though I was in the presence of Jesus. It was the most incredible feeling in the world. I wanted that moment to go on forever, I mean it felt like if i opened my eyes that He would be right before me, or if I extended my arm that i would be able to touch Him. Just an awsome experience. Even if it didn't happen again like that for a long time, that one moment was incredible

I did not want to post this in OBOB, now I seen this thread and happy that I can post it here.

there was a windstorm about 3 weeks ago, trees all around my home swaying.. I was alone.. I knelled down at my frenchdoor looking outside praying that no tree would fall on my home.. I had this instinct of something was going to happen... (during this time, I was not fully to St. Judes and going to 2 other churches) as soon as I stopped praying and got up the wind slowed down... I heard a loud thump.. looked around out all the windows to outside.. a 3ft wide tree broke in half and fell on top of Blessed Mary.. I have a statue on a small hilltop right in front of the home.. there was 2 cars parked, brand new which my hubby was storing for someone.. the statue did not even crack at all.. not one piece off it.. it is like she pulled it to her to answer my prayer.. the tree is still down, my hubby took pics and waiting for him to download them to the home pc.. I work on a laptop..

I believe she intervened, because it did not break anything at all.. we had a tree fall before and it fell on my hubby's car..

she is in my heart daily now.,.. I placed all my statues back in my home.. and all my saint cards and rosary beads on the pictures..

Before this, I was leaning to leave the Church for good. I have officially left the other 2 churches. My roots are Roman Catholic and I will remain faithfully to the Lord and his Church.

Thank you Lord and Blessed Mother Mary for showing me the light..

Please pray that I stay strong in my faith and that the demons stay away from me to try and lure me away..

Dear God, You generously blessed Your servant, St. Pio of Pietrelcina, with the gifts of the Spirit. You marked his body with the five wounds of Christ Crucified, as a powerful witness to the saving Passion and Death of Your Son. Endowed with the gift of discernment, St. Pio labored endlessly in the confessional for the salvation of souls. With reverence and intense devotion in the celebration of Mass, he invited countless men and women to a greater union with Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.
Through the intercession of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, I confidently beseech You to grant me the grace of keeping me strong in my struggles if any may come, keep the demons away from my body, give me the grace to follow the right path. Love you with all my heart Lord..Amen.
Glory be to the Father... (three times).

Amen! What a wonderful testimony. It's amazing how many lives Mary has touched throughout the centuries...even in the last 100 years, there are so many accounts of her appearing to people and bringing them to deeper union with her Son.

Thank God for giving us a mother.

 Good morning and peace and the wondrous mercy of our Lord to all this morning. I love to sit outside and have prayer and devotions in the spring, summer and fall. This is my spring St. Francis flower garden where I have prayer and sit quietly in meditation in the mornings. Often the birds sing their praise to our Lord as I pray.

My daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis over 2 years ago.. this is when I was an outside Catholic, did not go to church but prayed when in need only.. and always loved St. Pio since a child, loved his ways of humble and humility, reminded me of Jesus since I did not learn about Jesus.. (my fault)..

anyways.. had to bring her to the doctors every 6 months to check the spine and at first it was growing very much to the side which meant she would be in a brace.. neck to hip.. :(

I cried and cried and prayed for intercessory to St. Pio to heal her, she is young and know of this disease, it has been in the family and some have only grown 4' tall because of it and debilitating back pains..

the last visit was 4 months ago and wallah, started growing straight and continues to.. she has grown to 5'5" right now and continues to be in good health,..:) the doctor was amazed and said he could not believe how straight it went, even the bending from the lower part where it began.. he kept double checking to make sure he did not mis-diagnose.. my smile and my heart was filled with joy.:) . knowing Jesus does hear his Saints and continues to..

there are many other health stories which have happened through St. Pio in Jesus name.. Thank you Lord..

Intervention from Mary
It happened 3 years ago on a journey to India. My brother and I had to take a 10hour plane trip, a 3-day train ride, a bus ride and a rikshaw(a kind of a cab in India) to get to my uncles house.the travel was very long.by the time we were on the bus we were so WEARY and exhausted that i just closed my eyes and said a hail mary.prayed to Mary asking for the rikshaw to be close by when we got to the bus stop.and ofcourse as were getting off the steps of the bus, there was a man taking our luggages from us to his rikshaw right beside the bus! phew! I'll never forget that moment.and it was a bus stop! thank you mother Mary for your intercession.God is good.

This thread is for testimonies by those of us who have asked a saint for his/her intercession and had our prayers resolved to a good account. :)

I'll start: several years ago, I had a relative who was seeking an annulment so she and her new spouse could return to the Sacraments. I prayed to St. Monica (patron of married women) and to Our Lady on their behalf every day for several months as their case went through the Tribunal.

They received a favorable judgement and the annulment was granted, and today they are both in good standing in their parish and are active litugical ministers.

Thank you, Lord Jesus. Thank you, Mother Mary, and thank you, St. Monica. :)
When I was much younger, I was away from the church for about ten years, and was not following the Lord at all. Shortly before I was to be married, I felt the Lord tugging at my heart to come back to him, but I was not ready, (because of too much pride).
About three months into our marriage, I had a very unusual dream: In this dream I was in a cloud (or mist) and was talking to a very beautifull woman, who was dressed in white , wearing a white veil. I asked this lady (whom I believed to be one of the saints), "When I die, will I go to heaven?" I then received an immediate response from this lady, who turned, looked me straight in the eyes, and stated with all seriousness and concern; "You must repent". With that, I found myself being pulled through a tunnel at a tremendous rate of speed. I awoke, sitting up in my bed screaming. Within days after that conversion experience, I started attending daily mass before work. It took about a month for me to build up the courage to go to confession, but after i did, it felt like great weight had been lifted off my shoulders. After this confession, I began to receive our Lord in Holy Communion.
About a year later, I realized that the lady in my dream was the Blessed Mother.
THANKYOU JESUS, and THANKYOU BLESSED MOTHER for you are the one who brought me back to your Son.
