  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

We'll have the family gathering, and the cookout. There are no fireworks here on the 4th anymore. Before the 4th, yes. But, nothing on the day itself. What has our 4th of July celebration come to?

Michael

Wow! I can't imagine the 4th of July with no fireworks! What every happened to patriotism?

Aren't fireworks symbolic of the "bombs bursting in air"?

And when is the air likely to be bursting with bombs?

The writer of the song, Francis Scott Key, was aboard a ship watching during night as the British bombarded Ft. McHenry during the War of 1812. But in the morning, the flag still waved over the fort.

So, IMHO, there is a symbolic connection between fireworks and "bombs bursting in air".

Would the writer of the song know?

It makes sense to think he would, don't you agree?

Thank you Margolit, that is an interesting piece of history! I quite agree about the symbolic connection!

Do you think that most people are thinking along those lines when they see the fireworks or are we the only ones who do?
