Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've assumed that technology to read burned (intact) paper (of whatever material) has been around a while. It appears what is new is that the volume of an unrolled scroll, after being CT-scanned, was able to be digitally processed such that the virtual version of scroll was unrolled. When I consider that the writing on one part of the scroll was layered with other writing separated only by the thickness of the scroll paper, it does seem amazing.

I think you're correct over all. However, the 'virtual unrolling' of a burnt (or damaged) scroll is 'new' or newly developed.

Too bad it's one of those 'evil science' things, huh?

I think God commanded us to learn about his creation when he commanded us to subdue the earth. :D
You may have gathered from various posts, I am of like mind. When God created the Universe, He created the laws of nature simultaneously. I rather think all in all, He expects us - humans - to 'explore' in all senses of the word. From what I gather of God's 'character' - for lack of a better term - He encourages intelligence and learning and does not approve of mental and intellectual sloth any more than He does of physical or spiritual sloth.

Or the bumper sticker version, "My God is NOT God of the Stupid!"

What's cool (in addition to the technology) is the fact that this ancient scroll reveals how God has preserved His Word even to this day:

This week, incredible cutting-edge technology allowed archaeologists to finally read the contents of a burned 1,500-year-old scroll found near the Dead Sea in 1970. The remarkable discovery of verses from the Book of Leviticus, which matched, letter for letter, the Hebrew text still in use today, is the first instance of one of the Five Books of Moses ever found in a Holy Ark.
