Another reason not to spank your kids...

In a police interview released last week, the boy said he had been spanked five times the night before the shootings because he did not bring home some papers from school. And according to the latest documents, the boy told a state Child Protective Services worker that his 1,000th spanking would be his last.
In an affidavit for a search warrant, Sgt. Lucas Rodriguez writes that the boy "is believed to have made ledgers and or communicated in the form of writings about his intentions," saying the boy tallied the spankings on a piece of paper.

I'm really confused on why someone would spank their kid for forgetting something.

More confused on why any child would receive over 1,000 spankings by age 8

We paddle our kids for Specific things (rebellion, defiance, intentionally hurting a sibling)... but this, well thats just wrong. IMO, that family had some odd reasons for spanking and didn't spend enough time on the Love part. (I wonder who's book they were following?) You have to love & nurture your children no matter how you discipline. That boy obviously didn't feel loved or nurtured.

We all know I am against spanking, but I agree there was at least one form of abuse in this home. The fact that he shot another man that lived with him points to something very disturbing.

I'm sure there was something else going on, too. After all - a child isn't going to randomly go talking to social workers and showing notebooks if there wasn't some prior issue.

My MIL spanked her kids often for almost any reason. One thing that led to a spanking one time might not the next.

I was spanked for forgetting something before - I don't know if that equals abuse in and of itself.

Obviously this kid was abused and a lot of things happened besides the over use of spanking.

I agree. I don't care for the title as well.

Any 8 year old planning this kind of thing has probably been dealing with more than spanking. I think there are far deeper things going on other than the father spanking.

I agree that obviously something else was going on in that house because 8 year olds don't just up and kill their parents. There had to have been some kind of abuse but I don't believe that spanking alone caused that child to kill his father and fathers friend.

It's not the number of spankings... it HAD to be an abusive household for a child to get that messed up.

You guys really don't think that 1000 spankings alone couldn't cause a boy to feel so humilated and angry that he would do this? I mean, at 1000 spankings, the father must have hardly had time to DO anything else with/to the kid.

I agree with Neenie1. 1000 spankings = abuse. I am sure the the excessive use of corporal punishment was part of larger matrix of emotional cruelty, but spankings were obviously the main vehicle to inflict abuse on this child.

I guess I'm having trouble with the word spankings. Because done correctly, a spanking does NOT equal abuse. Now I know that a lot of people on this board think it is, but I don't. I think it's a valid form of discipline, when handled properly. But, that's not the issue here.

I still believe that something else must have been going on in that household, above and beyond spanking.

I really think theres sooo much more to this. I am sorry people died, but I really am praying for this child. The little we do know about what happened is red flag after red flag. I dont want to accuse abuse, but I really get that feeling. Especially the spanking for forgetting.I dont think most parents would ever do that

Yes, this. And what Mrs. A2J said. This is so much bigger than a kid just geting spanked. I don't think I like the title, either.

I agree with you that spanking if done correctly is not abuse.

But for a parent to have to spank their child in 1000 times in 8 years, (well less than that really because they have to be old enough to count and remember them all, so maybe 1000 since say 4 or 5 maybe?) it obviously isn't working and there must have been a lot going on in that house for the parents to not seek other methods of effective discipline.

I do agree with this. Obviously something else was going on.

Okay... a thousand spankings in 8 years. That bereaks down to about one every three days. And then you have to take into consideration what this CHILD thought constituted a spanking. I am going to echo everyone else and say there is much more to this than meets the eye. This child had issues that went way beyond spanking!!

it wasn't 1000 spankings in 8 yrs unless the kid knew how to count when he was an infant! my 4 yr old can only count to 20. The kid obviously had only been keeping track for a year or two at the most as he wouldnt have been capable of doing so before age 6 or 7. So now how many is that? many per day i imagine..this is sick twisted child abuse! sickening!
