This is a weird one, so don't say you haven't been warned LOL. My 6 year old son is terrified of flushing TP down the toilet.

It all began when he was just a little guy and first learned to use the toilet. One time he wiped himself, and thought he needed to use an entire roll to do the job. Needless to say, the toilet got plugged. Well, Dad came in there and basically over-reacted, kind of hollared at him, told him to never use such enormous amounts of paper again. Since then he is scared to flush his paper. He will throw it in the trash. He says he is worried that the toilet will make a flood.

Dad has repented -several times- of his over-reaction (he's normally the most laid back guy in the world), apologized to DS profusely, and has continued to explain that you can flush quite a bit of paper without causing any flood. We've had demonstrations and everything. Still won't do it. If I take the trash can out of the bathroom he will just toss the paper into the corner on the floor, or carry it to another trash can in the house.

I realize it's not a huge deal in our own home if he chooses to use the trash can. But what about in public or if he's somewhere without a trash can? So far he doesn't seem to have to go #2 when he's away from home.

I feel he needs to get beyond the fear. Any suggestions?

I know several families who do not flush their toilet paper. We always do, but my in laws do not...they have well water and they run out of water easily. The rule is that you only flush if you HAVE to in their house. I don't think it's as odd as you think.

If it bothers you, maybe you could get a trash can with a lid on it (my kids love the ones that you can open with your foot).

Your poor little guy. I could just smack myself whenever I have a reaction like that that really makes a negative impression on my kids. It's a sad fact that it's far easier to break them down than it is to build them back up again. :(

Could you ask him to put the toilet roll in the toliet but not flush it and then you or your husband will flush it for him and then if it does flood it's your fault not his.

I like that suggestion...sounds good to me....Patty:thumbsup:
