So the laity don't need bishops, they can interpret divisions and heresies for themselves. They can work together as a community on issues of doctrine.

The Catholic Church itself works differently.

We do need bishops and cardinals and a Pope working along with the laity to keep everything straight.
all the cogs and belts and wheels need to mesh together in the right order for the machinery of the Church to work well.
