  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I really like some of it. I stopped liking pokemon a) after I got the game (coz it was frustrating watching the people and not being able to tell them what to do, like I could in the game), and b) after the whole gold/silver versions and everything after them.

I really like things like Hellsing, FLCL, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and a few others. Too bad they aren't on TV too much :(

Final Opinion: Cool!

Yeah, I remember when I attempted to play the first set of those games for the GBA - I was like, this sucks, what happened? I've yet to attempt playing them again - too busy hacking the first two generations of games to use on my Dreamcast (which I think I've actually finished, but for some reason trying to use the Mart in Vermillion in Gold makes the game crash).

I think there are anime which fall into both groups. :p

Personally, I'm a fan of the anime with more complex story lines. Think Serial Experiments Lain, .hack//SIGN, Evangelion, that sort.

And by complex, you mean non-existant, right? ;)
Honestly, I really liked eva until about episode 20, and then I just couldn't continue watching, and from what I've heard, I'm glad I stopped then.

As for the original post, Anime is awesome. Americanized pokemon and yugioh are not good examples to use when judging it. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part, most anime appeals to me in one way or another. Either by having some awesome action, some crazy humor, or a much cuter and nicer atmosphere when I'm in the mood for something to calm me down. I like american TV shows, but for the most part, anime just appeals to the things I enjoy better than a lot of american shows. I do love stargate, though.

Aye, it does tend to have more emotional appeal to it than American shows do, at least to me; then again, I rarely watch any sort of American TV apart from sitcoms and random stuff they play on cable, not hour-long police dramas or murder mysteries or whatnot. Those started to rub me the wrong way after freshman year when one of our guest speakers brought in real crime scene and autopsy photos (funny enough, though, it only really bothers me in the context of stuff like CSI and all that; I loved watching Elfen Lied and one of these days I'll get around to watching Higurashi no Naku Koro ni).

I've noticed that my anime watching habits have really shifted over the past 3-4 years from being dominated by mostly action shows to being a mixture of school comedy and romance/drama or some mixture of the two. Only the occasional action show slips through now, or at least the ratio is something like 1 or 2 out of 5.

what anime fan in the anime and manga forums is honestly going to say that anime is 'uncool'?
there's a lot of anime's that i like but my current obsession is naruto (i played naruto: clash of ninja 2 for 13 hours straight yesterday >.>'). i think america messed up a few of the more 'common' examples of anime. pok'emon, digimon, yu-gi-oh!, and naruto are way better in japanese. if it wasn't for the english voice actor for gaara then i stop watching the dubbed naruto completely. if they mess up itachi or his famous 'run. run and...blah blah blah' line then i will stop watching the dub entirely. *duct tapes naruto's mouth to make him stop saying 'believe it'*

It depends on who you ask. Personally, I believe it to be completely uncool.

Of course, that's according to my personal definition of "uncool".

Yeah, but who wants to be "cool" anyway? :p

If you want to know how the rest of Japan sees anime fans, I suggest you watch Genshiken or Welcome to the NHK! or maybe Densha no Otoko (the series).

Enlightening stuff if you never thought about it before. After that, you'll be faced with the choice of accepting what you've become, or pursuing new interests.

If I cared what people thought of me, I doubt I'd be sitting in my room at 11 at night watching tv shows in a language I don't understand about people who don't even look real and yet I feel sad when they die. I accept who I am and what I like, and I've never given a darn about the mainstream, japanese or american. In my book, anime is cool enough for me to watch it and enjoy it! Buuut, that's me. I also hate reality shows, so what else is there for me to watch? :p

But while some of us don't care, there are some that do, or else we wouldn't have this thread.

That, and something called guilty pleasures. ;)

Oh, and MMORPG-playing anime fans owe it to themselves to watch Welcome to the NHK! episode 15.

I may have to check that out sometime then, seeing as Ive seen far too much anime for my own good, and Ive spent large amounts of time playing WoW.
