  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Animals being elevated over humans?

The news coverage in the wake of the recent chimpanzee attack has left me absolutely stunned by the dearth of information that was available about the victim's condition. It appears as though there was far less concern about this HUMAN BEING clinging to life and suffering from horrific injuries, than there was about the chimpanzee himself.

I am truly amazed at the number of people who insist upon anthropomorphizing animals and who elevate concerns about animals over and above those of humans.

I also think the owner of this particular chimpanzee was wildly irresponsible and there should be some accountability.

Your thoughts?

Perhaps this is because if someone would have thought of the well being of the animal in the first place then their wouldnt BE a human clinging to life in a hospital. Perhaps its trying to tell people these animals are NOT meant to be pets. Animals dont need anthropomorphism to deserve respect.

Well, since we all came from monkeys, it would only be right in order to respect them and give them the same fundamental rights as humans have. Afterall, that particular one was somebodys great grandmother!!!!!!

In all seriousness.
Yes, it is sad to see human life downgraded to the level of animal value. I have to admit I am not super surprised to see something happen though. Afterall, is having a 200lb chimp really a good idea as a pet?

I don't watch FOX, MSNBC, CNN, etc
All I watch in regard to news is local news, and mocks like the Daily Show and the Colbert Report.
:D
I also listen to Bob and Tom in the mornings.
The gist I got was "What the hell was she thinking?"
Not "how is the ape doing?", or "how are we going to help the chimp?"
But rather, "WHAT the hell was she thinking?"
Or "Duh, sleep with a wild animal, and see what happens"

To wit, most of the mocknews Ive heard actually calls into question her intelligence and/or wisdom in treating a full grown chimpanzee as a domesticated animal.

Perhaps the mocknews I listen to and watch is more to your point than the mainstream "realnews"?
I dunno

I imagine because the whole chimp situation is so bizzare. People are injured by accident and other people all the time, and from a news perspective it's not especially interesting.

I think once you include a wild animal that we don't normally associate with being a pet that the story gets attention.

It's horrible. It's tragic. I'm against it. What are we talking about?

Are people concerned for the victim in this attack? Of course! It's horrible! But would this attack have happened had the animal not been abused in the first place? Well, probably not, seeing as the animal should not have been kept as a pet in the first place.

Perhaps this is because if someone would have thought of the well being of the animal in the first place then their wouldnt BE a human clinging to life in a hospital. Perhaps its trying to tell people these animals are NOT meant to be pets. Animals dont need anthropomorphism to deserve respect.

Exactly. Animals deserve respect because they are Earth's creatures that do feel pain, that can lash out when abused, and that do have an important part to play on Earth, even though a lot of humans don't understand it.

The solution isn't to see animals as humans, but we also can't just see animals as inanimate objects or plants or mere possessions.

I agree with this post.

Let's put it into another perspective:

How much coverage would it have gotten if this was just your standard dog that attacked the woman? MAYBE local coverage, if that. But because it was an event that is far more rare, it gets more coverage.
