• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Animals are crazy!

Sorry if this has been done before.

A lot of references to animal nature have been made in debates about human nature, and god's hand in wiring animal brains.

I don't know whats more disturbing about this study. The fact that a duck would do that to a fellow duck, why god would wire a duck that way, or the fact that this got the 2003 nobel prize for biology.

The first case of homosexual necrophilia in the mallard Anas platyrhynchos (Aves: Anatidae) (page 243-247)On 5 June 1995 an adult male mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) collided with the glass façade of the Natuurmuseum Rotterdam and died. An other drake mallard raped the corpse almost continuously for 75 minutes. Then the author disturbed the scene and secured the dead duck. Dissection showed that the rape-victim indeed was of the male sex. It is concluded that the mallards were engaged in an ‘Attempted Rape Flight’ that resulted in the first described case of homosexual necrophilia in the mallard.

.
So whats everybodies theory on why the duck ducked the dead duck?

I think the rapist duck misinterpreted the dead ducks (lack of) behavior response ( as in no reaction to the rape) as a willing submissive female duck, which probably made the other duck really excited that he was totally dominate , ( the reason for the 75 minutes of xxx)
Do duck rely on behavioral cues in their social interaction to determine males and females and breeding? Or is it all hormones?

The guy took the dead duck away from the scene, while the other duck was looking for it, unable to comprehend that the guy carried it away from the scene. which means that ducks are stupid, unable to have independent abstract thoughts, and will hump anything that reminds them of xxx, like dogs do.

I also noticed the bird lived in the Netherlands, I have heard there are many homosexuals who live in that area, they also have legalized drugs and prostitution I think, and also the bird was hanging out at the Natural Museum ( a supporter of Evilution, I'm sure) . Maybe the ducks behavior is a result of the sinful immoral culture.

One more point about the "pecking on the head", maybe ducks are so stupid they communicate by hitting each others heads. Or was the duck kissing the other duck?

Riiiight. Because it's very easy to mix up the anus and the ****** on a female duck. Of course, if that little clue wasn't a dead give-away, then the difference in colour patterns and other tell-tales ought to have clued ducky in.

Okay, the above blanked out word isn't a "bad word", it's a part of the female anatomy, easily referenced in any biology or medical textbook.

WHat if the duck was SO STUPID as to not know the difference between the exit and entrance? And had impared judgement on top of that because he was so turned on that the "female" was being submisive.....because most of the time they are chasing the females down and being agressive about the XXX, so a submissive female would be highly desirable because it would increase the chance of reproducing.

Am I the only one that noticed the phrase:

homosexual necrophilia ?

I don't think the issue is over the male ducks, but the fact that one was dead.

Chalk it up to "science" to waste valueable time and research money on watching a live duck put the moves on a dead duck.

Let me ask this:

What conditions had live duck been kept in before he was introduced to manly dead duck?

Anyhow, my point is, the big finding isn't that a male may mate with a male, but that a male may mate with a dead male.

Very newsworthy, eh?

I bet the scientists laughed that all the way to the bank - doesnt sound like any "breaking news" to me, but something "funny" they wanted to pass along.

the reason why people find this newsworthy and valuable information is because we have a natural curiosity about animal behavior. Some people find this a interesting field of study and dedicate their lives towards learning more about Biology. So in that respect how do you feel its a waste of time?

Well, I can easily say that little "study" was a waste of time.

There was no controlled environment, no history on the animals, and absolutly no way to know exactly what the living was trying to accomplish.

Was he in for sexual lust? Was it a battling motive, territorial, or confusion at the strange turn of events?

This wasn't even a real study, was it? Just a 75 minute hoot or some people watching the action.

I can honestly say I thank God there are laws in place restricting the majority from exploring their curiosity.

And as it so happens, I am a biology major, so perhaps the neglect and haste of the study are a blaring siren of inapt behavior on the humans part.

It's quite amazing that it happened at all, regardless of the circumstances.

I can easily understand how this could happen.

1.) The live duck had never had sex before and couldn't tell the difference.
2.) Hormones went crazy and Romeo just couldn't control himself.
3.) Ducks are friggen stupid.

Probabbly a combination of the three.
