In particular, I find this passage disturbing:

We felt like our name was getting in the way of accomplishing our mission,” said Steve Sellers, the vice president for Campus Crusade, noting that the ministry will still be committed to “proclaiming Christ around the world.”
Sellers said researchers found that 9 percent of Christians and 20 percent of non-Christians were alienated by the name Campus Crusade for Christ

So, we can crusade on campus all we want!

Oh!

Except for Christ.

The word Christ and the Name Jesus sure ruffles a lot of "feathers".

Devil hates it.

Many now days are heavily influenced by the devil and don't even know it.

I use to work for Campus Crusade. While I find it a bit disturbing on one side, after reading the explanation of Steve, whom I personally know, I can understand where they are coming from. I'm sure they have prayed long and hard on the issue. They want to reach the world and not have the name they go by getting in the way. They do not plan to change their strategy nor do they plan to deny the One whom they represent. They will still preach Jesus Christ, crucified, and risen from the dead.

Being hated for being a follower and imitator of Christ is one thing. Being feared because your name gives the idea of forcing people to become "christians" is another. Who we are is not defined by a name that we've given ourselves.

Hi Q!

I respectfully disagree with you (no suprise there :)). They found that Christ was offensive to people, so they dropped it. No amount of torturous explanation will justify that.

If you saw it at the end of Campus Crusade for Christ would you question it? Yes, BenAdam, it's a cross.

In fact I would. The Gospel message shouldn't be changed to make it palatable for unbelievers. The name of Jesus shouldn't be changed as to not offend unbelievers, the fact that He is Messiah (ie Christ) shouldn't be dropped because it gives people a negative feeling. This isn't a marketing class.

Cru (as they choose to be called) are more interested in their organization than CHRIST.

They found their "name" was offensive. Not Christ whom they preach.

PS My explanation is not torturous, it's reasonable. Far less than being a witch hunt in it's beginnings. They changed their name, not Jesus.

I didn't mean your explanation Q, I meant their explanation/justification/softshoe.

And you know this 'cause you've personally sat down with Steve and discussed it with him??????

Ok, sorry. I do think their explanation is reasonable though...even though I don't fully embrace it. It's not that they are ashamed of Christ. They just want to reach a bigger area that their name is causing a problem.

I remember one person (at least) coming against you because of your pirate icon. They felt that you were misrepresenting Christ because pirates were bad people. It's just a name/title. They are still preaching the gospel to the world.

This reminds me of the short-lived name change of CF to foru.ms, and how many people were outraged because they said "Christ" was being removed from the forum. But I believed then, and I still believe now, that Christ is not found in titles on paper; Christ is found in people;
“We were not trying to eliminate the word Christ from our name. We were looking for a name that would most effectively serve our mission and help us take the gospel to the world. Our mission has not changed. Cru enables us to have discussions about Christ with people who might initially be turned off by a more overtly Christian name. We believe that our interaction and our communication with the world will be what ultimately honors and glorifies Christ.”
The portion I've emboldened is spot on. If "Cru" continues to proclaim the Gospel of Christ throughout the world and does not compromise the Gospel, then whether or not they have the name "Christ" or a cross on their letterhead is of little importance.

The ambiguously named organization. You don't know what we are until we are in your home.

As far as Cru (CCC) goes.....Untrue. If you read the link Pete posted you would know that it was the words "campus" and "crusade" that were the problem. They did not just remove the name "Christ", calling themselves only Campus Crusade. They could not very well go around calling themselves "Christ" now could they?

I did read the link and quite honestly their excuse was quite poor, because when detailing their process of renaming, it was evident there was minimal effort in retaining that part of their old name in the new name. Campus, Crusade, and Christ were all rejected.

How do I know it was a minimal effort, because they had the final say over their name, and had they truely desired to retain that part of it, they could have easily done so.

Why does one "have" to want to retain a particular name? I don't see the word "Christ" in your name. Did you purposely leave it out? I'm sure you did not. Does anyone have a say in what you call yourself? I'm sure they do not. A name does not make the man/woman/organization.

If we truly desired to retain our image of our Savior we would not judge others so easily and unfairly.
