And then they came for the birds, but there was no one left to tweet

Even as we now have World War III possibly in our near future, there are still those who are hard at work with far more pressing issues, such as reinventing, reimagining, and renaming everything. Even the birds are immune from being targeted....

“There is power in a name, and some English bird names have associations with the past that continue to be exclusionary and harmful today,” the organization’s president, Colleen Handel, said in a statement. “Everyone who loves and cares about birds should be able to enjoy and study them freely.” Rather than review each bird named after a person individually, all such birds will be renamed, the organization announced.

AOS President Colleen Handel, Ph.D., said: “There is power in a name, and some English bird names have associations with the past that continue to be exclusionary and harmful today. We need a much more inclusive and engaging scientific process that focuses attention on the unique features and beauty of the birds themselves. Everyone who loves and cares about birds should be able to enjoy and study them freely—and birds need our help now more than ever.”

People aren’t paying proper attention to the things the OP would like them to pay attention to?

What a complete waste of time and outrage.

Who gets mad at a society who names birds, studies birds, publishes educational materials on birds and all kinds of other bird related stuff for not doing something that has nothing to do with birds like worrying about or working to stop WWIII? As far as the AP story, is there nothing else going on in the world worthy of reporting? Should news just be Israel\Hunter\Russia\Ukraine all the time?

What work to stave off WWIII do you expect from the American Ornithological Society?

Anyway, a roseate spoonbill by any other name...

I saw this article yesterday and read it out of curiosity as I'm an avid birdwatcher.

Oddly, I've never looked at the name of a bird and wondered whether it might be exclusionary or harmful due to the personal beliefs or background of the person it was named for. We might as well start naming and renaming everything, humans included, with numbers and symbols.

Just as long as we don't use Roman numerals. It could offend Romans.

Romani moth?

And definitely best to avoid the Orsotriaena medus cinerea butterfly...
Yeah, Brad? How did this post help the Israeli's defend their homeland, or the Ukrainians expel the Russians? Why are you even here? /s

The eruptions from the troops would be catastrophic. Not exactly helping the war effort.

...but I mean, in all fairness, what would you like the ornithologists to focus on?

Their training and skillset doesn't really translate to foreign policy research so whether they did or didn't do this, it's irrelevant to the impending military conflicts because they wouldn't be the people involved in diffusing those conflicts anyway.

I get that the "political correctness in bird names" initiative is a tad silly and trivial sounding, but it's not like it's changing the trajectory of middle eastern diplomatic efforts.
