John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” Who was God targeting through His Son? He was targeting those who strayed from the house of Jacob, and those whose blind ignorance would have prevented God from giving them eternal life along with the wayfarers from the House of Jacob.
The idea of the son of God appearing on earth goes as far back as the Old Testament. Isaiah 49:5-6 says “And now the LORD says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him; and that Israel might be gathered to him—for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD, and my God has become my strength— he says: ‘It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.’” So it’s not just the wayward children from the House of Jacob, it’s everyone to the ends of the earth. Isaiah 49:5-6 establishes God’s commitment to save us all, through a Son He has appointed. Jesus is that Son, and the riddle of whom Isaiah is referring to in those passages is solved.
How are we to be saved? It’s through Jesus’ guidance, via the Word of God who resided in Jesus’ flesh for him to speak it, as stated in John 1:14. We might imagine that God at this point has determined His Word was not going to reach the ears of the people through things like osmosis; it must be spelled out.
What remains is that we believe what Jesus and his disciples tell us, taking to heart the things which the Lord considers to be sins, and being focused on loving God and loving eachother. And in loving God, we accept the words that come from Jesus and his disciples; and understanding that accepting those words amounts to accepting and believing in Jesus himself as is written in John 1:12 and running with what he says.
The only question that remains here is how serious people are in wanting eternal life. How serious can people be when they ignore the poor and needy and they allow themselves to be led by those who do not lead with God in mind, as envisioned in Romans 13:1. Seems that a lot of people, including leaders, are influenced by Satan’s pull and disregard God’s Word.
Jesus said in John 14:6 that no one comes to the Father except through him. Jesus takes his commission seriously. Can we take the responsibility he gives us just as seriously?
