Isaiah prepares the way, to show how all was in darkness, so all can go to the light, everyone who does not go to the light, remains in their same darkness.
The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light.
the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people.
the Gentiles shall come to thy light,
Isaiah 9:1Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.
2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

John bearing witness of the light, tells the disciples who will be the disciples of Jesus, to behold the Lamb of God, they then follow that light, Jesus Christ, which takes away the sin of the world.

John 1:35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

Nicodemus came to Jesus by night time, Jesus answers that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Jesus tells that every one that does evil hates the light, and does not to the light, to be reproved.
Jesus tells that them who do truth come to the light, that their deeds may be made manifest, to be wrought in God.

When John was put in prison, He left Nazareth, and came to the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim, fulfilling what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, the people which sat in darkness saw great light.
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Jesus being that light shining in the darkness calls the disciples, who see that light, ang go to Jesus.
Matthew 4:12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim.

16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

To they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.
To the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
To those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

We see our calling, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called.
God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.
All things that are reproved are made manifest by the light.
Awake you that sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.
The true light now shines.
He that says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness even until now.
He that loves his brother abides in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
