Southern Clearing
5th Day in the Month of Yanayir

The tracks were large, embedded deep in the snow of the Southern Clearing. Desmond studied them silently as he breathed in deeply, the air rushing out of his lips into a thick cloud from the cold. It didn’t sit well with him; didn’t sit well at all. There was something undeniably wrong with this picture.

“Looks like a bear,” Tristan said to his left. “A female faunus from the western hills.”

“In the dead of winter?” Fallon asked, disbelieving from the right.

All three men looked to one another, all three thinking the same thing. Kry. There could have been numerous other explanations for the tracks, but as Desmond knew all too well, it was better to expect the absolute worse. “Where is it heading?” He asked Tristan.

The man scanned the area where the tracks were randomly scattered. “Southeast.”

Desmond hesitated. It was too close for comfort. “We’ll slow down a little,” He said. “We need to give it time to move further away, and hope it doesn’t feel the need to retrace its steps.”

Fallon grunted and stroked his graying beard with his eyes on the trees. It was dark, but Desmond could just catch the deep lines in his furrowed brow from the flickering flames of the campfire behind them. The older man was his father’s spearman, a normally quiet soul who knew how to keep others in line, usually with only one glance. Loyal, noble, and true. The princeling never had a reason to mistrust his judgment.

“Our safest route would be to head west for several miles,” Fallon suggested.

Tristan jerked his head over his shoulder. “What of her?”

As if on cue, all three men looked to the sleeping form bundled in heavy furs near the fire. Anna’s pale lips were partly cracked in deep slumber, her cheeks flushed, the tip of her nose pink, and her dark hair sprawled out in contrast to the white snow underneath. This is why they were here. Desmond and what few remaining brothers were left would most likely perish in battle or sickness, his sisters possibly following behind with the way the world was going. But Anna, the youngest, would survive. She would be kept hidden and safe, so when the time came for the healing of Semoria amidst the current destruction, she would be able to rise. They were the darkening sky, their time drawing to an end, and she was the new dawn, the shining light in a somber world.

Protect her, They had said. Watch her. Their mission was to get her to Mossol, and that didn’t mean scaring her to pieces. “She will know nothing of it,” Desmond answered. “She already knows it’s dangerous ground, and caution has become a necessity. We’ll simply keep a watchful eye at all times.” The two men nodded their agreement.

“It’s best,” Fallon said. “Women are often too emotional, too fearful. We shan’t have a bawling female distracting us.”

Tristan smiled, and although it was a tired and sore smile, it still brought a little bit of cheer to the frozen travelers. “Speak for yourself! Nothing has been successful in distracting me from my grand ventures!”

Desmond raised his eyebrows. “Do those grand ventures involve burning food?”

Blinking, Tristan’s gaze shot towards the fire where their meal of pheasant on a spit was currently being blackened. He swore and stood, kicking at the burning embers. Desmond met Fallon’s gaze and the older man shook his head, clearly not amused, but the prince marveled at his friend’s spirit even in the midst of such turmoil.

Once the meat was salvaged, Tristan plucked up the stick and held it out, bowing with a flourish. “Dinner is served!”

Fort Mossol
7th Day in the Month of Yanayir

Tristan shifted on top of the horse, and stuck his finger in the collar of his cloak, pulling at it. Damn wool. It was itchy, and although his face was bitterly cold, his neck was sweating. May the limber trees burst into flames lest they wear anything comfortable! This was one of the reasons why he hated travel, though he could never understand how Desmond dragged him into these things. Nor did he care to think of the fact he had been the one to jump at the chance to go. In the end, however, what did it matter? He was still stranded in the middle of the forest in bloody winter with an earache, chapped lips, and frozen fingers.

But his moping was short-lived. It wasn't long before the tops of Fort Mossol could be seen. The fort was wider than it was long, the walls were made of stone and stood a good thirty feet tall, and the flag of Ballard could be seen waving proudly on top of the lookout tower. They'd made it!

Tristan looked behind him, Desmond and Anna close in the middle and Fallon taking up the end. "We've arrived!" He announced cheerfully. A small smile touched Anna's lips while Desmond craned his neck to have a better look. And if Tristan wasn't mistaken even Fallon's expression looked a little more hopeful.

When he turned to avert his gaze back ahead though, he quickly pulled up on the reigns and stopped. His heart skipped and he narrowed his eyes. A faunus bear! Or a Kry. It was large with tan fur, pacing up and down the front gates with short grunts that could be heard even from the edge of the clearing. Was it the same one they had tracked two days ago? Odd. Why hadn't they seen anymore of its tracks?

"What's wrong?" Desmond asked. "What do you see?"

Tristan quietly dismounted, grabbed his bow, and took an arrow from the quiver strapped to the side of his horse. "Kry," He answered quietly.

Desmond and Fallon immediately followed suit, the prince with his scimitar and the spearman with his spear. All three men knew it would do no good if they were caught, but in their minds it was better to try anything than surrender to death. Especially with the heir at their mercy. They huddled around a tree at the edge to look while Anna remained on the horse, fearful.

"We must be cursed," Desmond muttered and Tristan swore under his breath. They were so close, too!

When minutes passed and no one said or did anything, Tristan finally gathered the courage to ask what nobody wanted to hear, sighing. "What do we do?"

No matter how many years he spent here, Major Nolz would never get used to the cold in the dead of winter at Fort Mossol. His hands would become colder than ice and his fingernails would turn blue around the time of the first snowfall, and wouldn't warm again until spring. It had always been that way, even when he was a young man. He used to swear he was born on the wrong continent and would frequently make mention of moving to a more tropical environment and leaving behind this frozen hell whenever he got grumpy about the cold. But he never did move. And now at the age of fifty-six, he figured he probably never would.

"Major Nolz!" Came a shout from beyond his office doorway, causing him to look up, his dark green eyes peering out of a lined and battle-hardened face. It didn't sound as though the voice was bringing pleasant news. A recruit, new to the fort within the last three months, skidded to a stop outside his open door, practically falling against the doorframe. Nolz fought the urge to roll his eyes. These young ones. Always had to be taught the proper way to do thing here. "Major Nolz, sir!" He panted, pushing himself off the doorframe, his eyes wide.

"Private Bennings." Major Nolz stood from behind his desk, his expression stern. "That has to be the sorriest entrance a soldier in my company has ever made." He frowned, the lines on his forehead becoming more prominent over dark, bushy eyebrows, flecked now with gray, as was his dark brown hair and trimmed beard. He placed his hands behind his back, waiting for a response.

The recruit blinked a few times and then stepped into the room, saluting. "I'm sorry, sir. But-"

Nolz's eyes narrowed. "No buts, Private." He stepped around from behind his desk and came to stand in front of the young man. "I will not have my soldiers acting like a peasant militia." He looked the man up and down once. "Stand up straight." The young man did as he was told. "Shoulders back." Bennings straightened his shoulders, resigned to the fact that he wasn't going to be getting off the hook anytime soon. What you have to say can wait. Nolz grunted. "Now salute and address me properly."

The young man saluted. "Major Nolz, sir. I have urgent news."

That's obvious. Nodding, Nolz finally allowed the man to say what he needed to say, "Now you may give me your news."

Bennings seemed relieved, looking Nolz in the eyes. "Major, sir...they've arrived." Nolz's eyebrows came together. They? Be more specific, boy! "Prince Desmond and Princess Anna. They're outside the front gates."

Now the major realized why this news was so important. His heart skipped a beat. "And the Kry?" They had been watching a faunus bear pace back and forth in front of the gates for the last hour, all of them agreeing it was most likely Kry. If it was still out there and Prince Desmond attempted to come closer...

The private shook his head. "It's still there, sir."

Damn! Major Nolz pushed past the private and walked briskly out of his office towards the front gates, knowing the private would follow. They had to signal the prince somehow! "Does the prince know the Kry is there?"

"Yes, sir. He and the others have stopped at the edge of the clearing behind a large tree."

Good. That meant they'd stay hidden until it was decided what needed to be done. "Light the fires. Get the smoke spheres ready. We'll need them." He ordered as he stepped out into the main courtyard, taking the steps up onto the wall two at a time. Bennings ran off to do as he was ordered as Nolz strode for the man he knew would have the information...Sergeant Biggs. "Biggs. Where are they?" He demanded, coming to stand next to the sergeant.

Biggs, a younger man in his early thirties, was standing with a stony expression as he looked out over the clearing. He turned his head to look at Nolz and then lifted a hand and pointed towards his right, past where Nolz was standing. "There, sir. Near that fir tree."

Nolz's eyes flickered that direction, resting on the young prince peeking out from behind the fir tree. He had the princess with him, and it looked like two others. "Have you signaled them to let them know we are aware they're here?"

"Yes, Major." Biggs answered with a nod and then peered down below them. Nolz followed his gaze to the Kry pacing, it's large paws digging a trench in the snow. "I don't believe the Kry has seen them yet. But it won't be long."

He was right. They needed to get the royals and their companions inside the fort walls. And fast. At this moment, Bennings returned, saluting the major. "Smoke spheres are ready, sir. And the torches are lit. The men are on standby to await your orders."

Nolz nodded and then let his eyes drift back to the prince. They couldn't go out and engage the Kry. It would be suicide. The Kry couldn't be injured by Semorian weapons. His mind racing, Nolz let his eyes wander over the clearing and then the fort. They couldn't come in the gate. So...they'd have to come over the wall. The closest wall was the eastern one, to Nolz's right. If they hid in the trees and made their way over there quietly, then Nolz and his men could haul them up. "Biggs, get men over to the east wall with rope. We're going to have to pull them up over the wall." He looked to the sergeant and nodded once. "Light four smoke spheres and drop two out front and two along the east wall to confuse the Kry." Smoke, they had found, was their only defense against the creatures. Smoke tended to cover their scent so it wouldn't smell them and also seemed to disorient them, possibly stinging their eyes. "And get someone on the flags to communicate our plan to the prince." The Semorian military had signal flags they used to communicate long distances, certain positions indicating letters of the alphabet to spell out messages or words.

With that, Nolz began walking hastily along the wall towards the eastern end of the fort, stopping at the corner where the north wall met the east wall and climbed the small tower. From this vantage point, Nolz could see all that was being done. Two smoke spheres were prepared on each wall, awaiting his order to drop them. The smoke spheres were simple. Round iron balls with holes cut in them, stuffed with wood shavings covered in a particular concoction of black oil that allowed the wood to produce clouds of gray smoke when burned.

Nolz waited until everyone was in place and the signal having been given to the prince. Once he got confirmation from Biggs that everything was set, he gave the order. "Drop the spheres." Immediately, Biggs gave the signal and the spheres were lit and tossed over the sides, positioned so that the smoke would drift towards the Kry. He watched as the Kry's attention was drawn to the smoke, slowing in its pacing. "Ready the ropes and send men over the side to help secure the prince and princess." His orders were immediately obeyed, and as the smoke began to thicken, Nolz turned his attention towards the treeline. Go now, Your Highness. Quickly.

As soon as the words left Tristan's mouth, Desmond was rewarded with a sickening feeling in his gut. What to do indeed. They needed to get Anna inside the fort to safety, but the only way to succeed was to rid of the Kry. The best way to do that would be a distraction. However, it was a suicide attempt. There wasn't any guarantee at all, and in fact, a very small percentage that the one distracting would make it out alive. If only they had another way, but alas, they didn't.

Just then he felt a tap on his arm. Once Fallon had his attention, he pointed up towards the sky. Desmond followed his finger to see a couple men in the northern watchtower giving them flag signals to go to the east wall. They were going to help! Immense relief flooded through his body as he turned and quickly made his way back towards Anna, reaching for her. They had to move fast.

"What is it?" She asked, fear filling her eyes.

Once she had dismounted, Desmond pressed a finger to his lips in a gesture of silence. Then he went for the bags, which were mostly filled with blankets, food, and pouches of water while Tristan came up behind and grabbed his quiver of arrows. They'd have to leave the horses. They were much too large and much too noticeable. Desmond grabbed Anna’s arm after they had everything they needed, and followed the other two back towards the clearing. Now it was matter of waiting for the right opportunity.

Within moments balls of smoke were dropped from the walls to the ground below, briefly distracting the faunus bear. Desmond caught the others gazes, but nothing needed to be said. Tristan took the lead, moving fast on his long legs with Desmond following behind, holding onto Anna, and Fallon at the end. The princeling couldn’t help his brown eyes from shifting in that direction when they passed by, simply waiting for the furry beast to lunge through the smoke at them. Several times he’d come face to face with a Kry, and how he lived, he didn’t know, but now wasn’t a good time to rely on such luck. If they were caught, that was it.

The smoke drifted in the current of the wind, and the group had to pull their cloaks up around their faces while trying desperately not to cough. Desmond squinted, attempting to keep sight of Tristan ahead. It was slow going, but eventually they made it to the eastern wall without any mishaps, and found two men waiting for them with a couple ropes dangling from the top. They didn’t bother with the average formal greetings, and hastily went to securing Anna to one of the ropes, tying it around her waist. By the time they were done, Tristan was already halfway up the wall himself. The next two were Fallon and one of men, Desmond staying behind purposely. Then it was his turn.

With one final glance towards the corner of the northern wall, finding no sign of the bear, Desmond began the climb. It was difficult, the stones slick with ice and snow and his hands under the leather gloves already numb, troubling his grip. But the men above pulling on the rope were helping. Yet they will be able to do nothing if you fall. His heart beating rapidly, he chanced a look up above. Several more feet and he’d be there.

However, he barely advanced when his boot lost its holding and slid, sending his body ramming into the stone wall. Somehow his grip on the rope remained, but his leg had scraped against a particularly sharp stone or maybe a chunk of ice. Wincing, he drew in a sharp intake of air through his clenched teeth. Oh, that hurt! He could already feel the throbbing set in.

“Your highness!” The second man on the rope called out.

“I’m fine,” Desmond grunted.

The man didn’t look convinced, but continued the climb anyway with Desmond slowly following. Once he was high enough, Tristan and another man grabbed onto his arms and practically hauled him over the wall. It wasn’t until he had swung his one leg over the edge and sat straddling it, on safe ground, that he realized…they’d made it. They’d actually survived the trek through the forest in the winter, and he’d carried out his mission successfully. They were sore, exhausted, and cold, but they were alive.

Major Nolz watched with trepidation as the small group made their way towards the east wall, casting glances towards the Kry every so often to make sure it hadn't taken notice. Come on. When the four travelers had reached the east wall, Nolz abandoned the tower with an order to Biggs to signal if the Kry moved and headed towards the wall to help the four of them up. His men did most of the work, the princess coming up first with a scout. Once the princess was up, Nolz gently led her to the side out of the way so the men could work at getting the other two up.

When all four, plus the two men that had gone down to help, were all up and over the wall, safe, Nolz stepped forward and nodded to the prince. "Prince Desmond." Then, to the young girl. "Princess Anna." His gaze returned to Desmond, looking him over for injury as he had noticed the younger man had slipped on his way up. It looked like there was a rip in his breeches, stained a little bit with blood, but other than that he looked in one piece. Of course, one never could tell. "Welcome to Fort Mossol. I'm Major Nolz, the officer in charge of the fort." He glanced around. "Any of you injured? We have a physician here at the fort who can tend you."

Desmond stood to his feet and wiped at the perspiration dripping on his brow with the back of his wrist, dipping his head towards Major Nolz. "I don't believe any of us are injured, sir," Desmond responded while looking around at the others. Anna had her arms wrapped around herself, clearly shivering, while Tristan and Fallon gathered up their bags and weapons. "I hurt my leg-" He continued, glancing down at his blood stained breeches. "-but it's nothing to worry about." Surely not something that needed special treatment in an infirmary, though he'd probably need to clean it and bandage it himself once they settled down for the night.

Bringing his mind to more important things, he looked back up at the Major. "Have there been consistent attacks on the fort recently?" He asked.

With a glance over his shoulder, Nolz shook his head. "Not like that." Turning, he faced Desmond again. "We'll get the occasional Kry, of course. Sometimes they'll travel in packs of three or four." He shrugged, bringing one hand up to his chin and subconsciously stroking his beard. "This is the first one we've had in awhile that's had such unusual behavior. Usually they'll circle the fort for a little while and then move on."

It was odd to see one pace like that in front of the gates, as if it knew someone were coming, or that's where people entered and exited the fort. It wasn't unheard of. He had lived through the previous Kry outbreak and had even been in the army for it, trying to protect the people from the unstoppable creatures. But it wasn't common, that was for certain. He gave a nod. "I'm sure it will move on now that there's smoke. Once we light the fires or send down smoke spheres, they usually leave."

It sounded like good news to Desmond. Fort Mossol was considered one of the safest refuge points, and it looked like it wasn't going to fail in that regard any time soon. "Let's hope so," Desmond said, ignoring the steady throbbing in his leg. He'd have to look at that soon. "Do you have all the preparations made for the princess' stay?" And not just a room and comfort either. Now that the princess was situated in the fort they would need to have more security available, especially around her.

Nolz nodded immediately. "Yes, we do." He and his men had been making preparations since they heard the princess was coming to stay. They'd beefed up security, done any repairs to the fort that they'd been meaning to do, and even changed some men's schedules around so that there might be someone with the princess at all times. "Her room is on the first floor, northern wall." His eyes flickered over to the princess as he placed his hands behind his back. "I've arranged to have a guard outside her door at all times and if she leaves, whoever is on guard must accompany her." His gaze drifted back to Prince Desmond and he nodded once. "Your father didn't specify whether or not he wanted her to be able to go outside the walls, but we assumed he wouldn't, so we only made minimal preparations for that until we learned differently."

Desmond looked to his sister who was shivering under the fur cloak that practically swallowed her whole. "No," He said. "The princess won't be permitted outside the walls." She didn't meet his gaze, but continued scanning the area around them with her teeth chattering. It had been a long, hard journey just to get there, and they all deserved a bit of rest. His eyes went back to the Major. "Please, make sure she's led safely to her quarters, a fire is made, and hot food is brought to her. She must regain her strength." Then he walked up to Anna, and reached out to place his hands on her upper arms. Slowly her brown eyes flickered up, searching. "Rest," He said quietly. "I'll check on you in the morrow."

Her brow furrowed slightly. "How long will you stay?" She asked.

"For a time," He answered. Giving her arms a quick squeeze, he turned to face Major Nolz. "I entrust you with her protection."

Major Nolz waited while the prince and his sister talked, the girl looking as though she was about to freeze. When Desmond had finished, turning to Nolz and entrusting the girl to his care, Nolz nodded and reached out to take gentle hold of her arm. "I'll escort her there personally, my lord, and see her needs are met." She definitely needed to warm up. Traveling for days in the snow, she was no doubt chilled to the bone.

He glanced down at the prince's leg. He should really get that bandaged up. With a nod to the man's leg, Nolz spoke up, "The infirmary should have the necessary items to take care of that." He lifted his gaze to meet the prince's. "Anything else you need, just let me know." With that, he turned to his first priority, Anna, and gently guided her along. "Come, let's get you settled."

Desmond watched as Anna was led away by the Major. Yes, he probably should head to the infirmary and gather what few supplies he needed to treat his leg. It wasn't bad, but it wouldn't do to walk around with caked on blood.

His attention soon turned to one of the other men as he spoke. "Should I show you to your quarters as well?" He asked them, Fallon and Tristan included in that.

The other two men met Desmond's gaze, and he nodded to them. "Go on. I'll be along shortly." He started to walk away. "Make sure to rest up!"

"Absolutely!" He heard Tristan call. There was surely no worrying whether or not that man would get the necessary food and sleep.

It didn't take long for Desmond to find the infirmary. Fort Mossel itself was a grand structure that might as well have represented a small village. Most of its inhabitants were soldiers, but there were also several businesses and smaller homes for the general public. It had grown considerably since it's creation many years ago, no doubt because of its reputation as being one of the safest refuges in this side of the land. However, the places themselves were something to be desired, the infirmary situated in a rock building with the stench of sweat and blood heavy in the air. But where the dead and the sick multiplied, it was sure to bring a vile atmosphere.

When he stepped inside, finding cots upon cots lined up along the walls, Desmond decided it might be easier if he found what he was looking for himself. Everyone seemed to be busy anyway. Passing by a few people, he started rummaging through nearby shelves for bandages.

"Is it broken?" The voice came from the other side of the bed where two very anxious parents were standing, the father looking concerned, and the mother looking a little bit weepy. Nora Steele glanced up at them for a moment, but didn't say anything, too intent upon feeling their son's wrist bones and up his arm. The boy, Clarence, had fallen from a tree and landed on his wrist. Nora slid her hands up his arm and back down, the boy sniffling every so often, apparently in some pain.

After a few moments, Nora concluded that there were no broken bones and smiled up at the parents. "Nothing's broken." She announced, which caused the father to let out a sigh of relief and the mother to smile, reaching for her son's other hand. The seven-year-old boy seemed pleased too, smiling a little behind his red nose, the only sign left that he'd been crying quite loudly when his parents had brought him in.

Nora took two steps backwards towards a set of shelves, just about tripping Nurse Tilly as she was carrying a basin of water over to one of the other patient's. The nurse managed to stay upright, only spilling some of the water onto the floor as Nora searched the shelves for a wrap. Nothing was said. The nurses were used to Nora's clumsiness and inability to see past the current patients she was working on. When she found the wrap she was looking for, she strode back over to the bed and spoke to the parents. "I'm going to wrap his wrist in a sling, however." She gripped the boy's shoulder lightly and encouraged him to sit up away from the pillow. Clarence obeyed and Nora noticed that the parents were looking a little bit worried again. "His wrist is swollen." Nora explained, her eyes going back to her work as she wrapped the boy's wrist and then proceeded to make a sling out of the wraps. "It's just a sprain, but he should wear this sling for a couple of days and then come to see me. It might be a bit painful during this time. Sergeant Daschle, do you have the tonic I gave you for your toothache a few weeks ago? Any left?"

The father, Sgt. Daschle, nodded twice. "Yes, ma'am."

"Good." Nora secured the wrap around the boy's shoulder and smiled down at him. "Give him half the dosage I told you. And he can have it every six hours for pain." She smoothed her hand over the boy's bright blonde hair and bent down to look into his eyes. "No more climbing trees for awhile, all right?" Clarence smiled and wiped his eyes.

"No more climbing trees at all." His mother stated, though she was smiling. And moments later, the little family was gone, the boy snuggled against his father's chest with his head on his shoulder. Nora sighed, watching them go. It was always nice when there was a good outcome for one of her patients. Too often she dealt with sickness or injury that could not be healed quickly and sometimes...not at all. But seeing the little boy leave the infirmary with nothing more than a sprain and two happy parents gave her a good feeling.

Back to work, Nora. Right. She had other patients. Like Private Harrison. The young man had been down in what the soldiers at Fort Mossol called "The Pit", where the black tar was made for the smoke spheres, when some of the heated tar splashed up into his face and hit him in the eye. Nora wasn't exactly sure how they made the tar, but she knew that at some point it had to be superheated before it was poured over the wood encased in the smoke sphere or poured over the piles of wood out around the perimeter of the fort. The poor soldier was most definitely going to be blind in that eye, and had serious burn marks on that side of his face. It was a little soon to change his bandages, but Nora figured the man might need some company too as he didn't have any family at the fort and no one came to see him.

Making up her mind, Nora took a deep breath and then turned around to gather some bandages from the shelves, her mind focused on her task and not aware of the fact that a man was currently searching through the shelves as well; at least...not until she ran smack-dab into him. "Oh! Pygmies!" Nora gasped and stumbled a bit, bouncing off him and catching herself on the counter, one hand reaching out and grasping his arm to steady herself. When she had succeeded in keeping herself from falling to the floor, Nora looked up into the face of the man she'd bumped into, smiling a little. "Sorry about that." She said, not recognizing him. He was only a little taller than herself and had soft, brown eyes that seemed to convey he wasn't too upset by her clumsiness. But since he wasn't part of the staff, he wasn't in uniform, and she didn't recognize him at all, Nora was curious as to who he was. And...what he was doing in her infirmary, looking through her shelves. "Is there...something I can help you with?" she asked, raising her eyebrows, her eyes darting to the shelves briefly and then back to him.

Desmond only begun his search when he was suddenly knocked into the shelves. His heart skipping, he looked in that direction just in time to see a woman gasp and almost fall over, grasping onto his arm to keep herself steady. On instinct he himself reached for her forearm, and made sure to hold on until she had found her balance. By the heavens! Was there no general walking space left in this place? But fortunately, the woman didn't look hurt. Even apologizing, and asking if there was something she could help him with. It was only then Desmond realized this woman was no ordinary woman, dressed like a man. It wasn't as though he'd never seen such an image before, but usually they conveyed the portrait of a loose woman.

Trying not to stare too hard - as it was unethical - Desmond retracted his hand from her arm. "I apologize, milady," He stated quietly before turning his gaze to the shelves. "I was searching for wraps of some kind so I might tend to the scratch on my leg."

He was hurt? Immediately, her mind shifted into the physician's role and her brow furrowed as she looked down at his leg, concerned. Sure enough, a long tear in his breeches indicated a wound on his leg, the cloth darkened with blood. "Oh, goodness." That was going to need some cleaning. She couldn't really see the wound itself, but the tear and the blood was enough. She looked up at the man and took him by the shoulders, stepping around him and then pushing him back towards the bed that young Clarence had just been sitting on. "Sit down. You'll need more than a bandage. That looks like it needs to be cleaned."

Desmond blinked, a little taken aback by this woman's abrupt attitude. Who was she anyway? And what right did she have to tell a patient what they needed? By all, he wasn't even a patient! He only needed a few bandages, and he'd be able to clean the wound and wrap it up himself. Clearing his throat, Desmond attempted to hold his ground so he wouldn't have to reach up and physically grab her to keep himself from going back any further. "I don't believe I need any assistance," He said. "It's not bad, and with just a few wraps I can take care of it myself."

Nora's frown deepened. Well, the man was polite and very well spoken, she gave him that. But why was he protesting the help? All he was going to do was bandage it. It would probably get infected and then he was going to have to come back and see her anyways. She could have it cleaned and bandaged in no time! And it wouldn't get infected. Unless...he didn't know she was a physician. She didn't really look like one in her breeches, blouse with her sleeves rolled up to her elbows, and vest.

She shook her head. "No, no. I'm a physician. Trust me." Nora patted him on one shoulder and then took a couple steps back to the shelves, looking for some bandages. A nurse passed by and Nora stopped her. "Could you get me some soap and water and clean rags?" The nurse nodded once and disappeared to go get the necessary items. Nora turned back to the man and stepped towards him, noticing he still hadn't sat on the cot. "Go ahead. Sit down. Let me take a look at that wound."

Desmond wasn't sure what he was more surprised by - the woman's continued insistence or her admission that she was a physician. He watched as she rummaged through the shelves herself, and contemplated leaving. It wasn't the help he was necessarily wary of, but the person offering the assistance. When she came back and demanded he sit down, Desmond's brow furrowed while looking behind him at the cot. "Honestly, milady-" He began, turning to face her again. "-I'm fine."

Nora couldn't figure this one out. He was too refined for a soldier. Didn't look like an officer. And yet almost all the soldiers she had treated showed the same insistence that they were fine as this man was doing now. Maybe it's just most men in general. But Nora was more willing to believe this was a soldier. Where he got such manners and such fine speech, she didn't know. But he had a weapon and he was dressed in rugged attire. Probably a scout of some kind.

She balled her hands into fists around the bandages and set her hands on her hips, staring up at him with eyebrows raised. "You soldiers are all the same." She said, shaking her head a bit. "Always insisting you're fine, even if a limb is about to fall off. Well, it's not happening on my watch. So..." Nora took a deep breath and licked her lips. "...sit down so I can look at that leg. I insist." She nodded once. "Please." She nodded again. "Sit."

Desmond aspired to be a patient man when it was necessary, but in dealing with this woman he could feel the flickers if irritation begin to surface. Why women had to paint men as conceited individuals who were about as smart as children in regards their health, he didn't know. But instead of being rude and leaving, he simply stared at the woman with a tense mouth. "Yes, milady," He agreed reluctantly in a low voice. Resting his hand on the hilt of his sword, he pushed it down to tilt the blade up, which gave him the desired room to sit. There he waited.
