In Acts 5:1-11 why do you think Anania and Saphirra died? For lying to the Holy Spirit?

Yes. The problem wasn't that they held back money. They could've done that if they wanted to. It was theirs. Ultimately, they had the wrong motives. People were getting praised for their faith by selling their possessions and giving it to the church. They wanted the praise and status but kept back part of the money, ultimately cheating the church and mocking God in the process.

God was making a point, lie to me and do things that are endangering the growth of the church and there will be consequences. It was important in this stage of the development of the Church for God to discourage those who placed themselves above God and the Church.

Yes, scripture is clear on this.

4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
