An interesting observation...

What did the earliest church fathers really say about the Sabbath day?

The Didache
"But every Lord’s day . . . gather yourselves together and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. But let no one that is at variance with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned" (Didache 14 [A.D. 70]).

What a nice gesture! But where in this quote does it say the seventh day Sabbath ought not to be observed?

And didn't the Apostles break bread daily? Why limit the breaking of the bread to the first day? Hence, the breaking of the bread argument really doesn't work.

"And every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple complex, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,"(Act 2:46 HCSB)

The Letter of Barnabas
"We keep the eighth day [Sunday] with joyfulness, the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead" (Letter of Barnabas 15:6–8 [A.D. 74]).

OK, I see nothing wrong with this...

Again, it's a very nice gesture to honor Jesus in this way.

However, where in this quote does it say the seventh day Sabbath was abolished, or that it ought not to be observed anymore?

Ignatius of Antioch

"[T]hose who were brought up in the ancient order of things [i.e. Jews] have come to the possession of a new hope, no longer observing the Sabbath, but living in the observance of the Lord’s day, on which also our life has sprung up again by him and by his death" (Letter to the Magnesians 8 [A.D. 110]).

Now was this really a nice thing to say? Did Ignatius not condemn Sabbath keepers by saying this?

In other words, did he not imply that those who kept the seventh day Sabbath after the resurrection of Christ were without hope, and still bound by the old ways of the Jews?

Wait a minute! Who came before Ignatius? Paul? Of course...

Did he observe the seventh day
Sabbath?

Of course he did: Acts 13:14, 27, 42, 44; 15:21; 16:13; 17:2; 18:4

It appears that Ignatius wandered away from Paul's example of obedience to God's command to keep the Sabbath day holy!

I don't know about you, but the argument that the early church fathers decide what goes obviously doesn't work here, because Paul received his calling before all of these, and he was an Apostle of God nonetheless! Yet, he kept the Sabbath day holy. And we should do the same...

"For you can have 10,000 instructors in Christ, but you can't have many fathers. Now I have fathered you in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Therefore I urge you, be imitators of me."
(1Co 4:15-16 HCSB)

"Be imitators of me, as I also am of Christ." (1Co 11:1 HCSB)

Imitators of Paul as was also Paul of Christ?

Watch out now!

Ready for this?

"When he [Jesus] came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read," (Luk 4:16 NRSV)

And what was Paul's custom?

"And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three sabbath days argued with them from the scriptures," (Act 17:2 NRSV)

Just as it was Jesus' custom to observe the Sabbath day, it was Paul's custom to do the same...

Those who reject the seventh day Sabbath are denying the obvious: it was never abolished God; and it was kept by Paul!

Who should we follow? Who should we listen to? I propose that we walk in the steps of Jesus Christ and listen to the same God that Paul listened to!

Sometimes I wonder who Paul was really referring to when he spoke against the so-called "super-apostles" (2Cor. 11:5; 12:11), and for what reasons he spoke of them so negatively.

You have my permission to duplicate this and give it to whomever you want...

This has been here for so long and no one has answerd. To be honest I started readind it and stopped because it was long. It seems no-one can be bothered to read it all.

What are you trying to accomplish by saying this? Are you trying to hurt me?

dude, I think you're preaching to the choir

I understand. I put this in here so that you could use it for future reference in case someone tries to use the church father argument against you in stating that the sabbath has been changed or done away with.

It seems that you're not grateful that I took the time to do this.

No one is required to read threads. But if you are not going to read it don't discourage others by posting without having read it, only to criticize.

Incidentally, I have read it, but I commented on the GT version.

And you will find my response was even longer than his post.

Some things are not simple, and they require longer posts.

I'm not trying to hurt you woobadooba. When I said what I said I was trying to be truthful. Sorry if I did hurt you, but I am very appreciative that you took the time to post it.

Honestly, it really isn't that long at all.

And if a person is really serious about matters of truth, length is usually of little concern.

Now, when something is long and drawn out which really has no substance to it, then there's good reason to complain. But if something proves to be enriching and very helpful in addressing certain matters, then it's worth it to take the time that is needed to read it. Of course, then one has to really read it to see this;)

When I post my thoughts I don't do it carelessly. I think everything out very carefully. For, I don't want to give people fluff, but something that has substance. So if they do tend to be lengthy at times, it is only because I have something important to say, not because I'm merely attempting to impress someones heart with eloquent rhetoric.
