Tolerance today, is a trait that our society deems quite high. Being tolerant of others is an ideal that has merit in any society. Some in the media, have always shown tolerance in their everyday lives and in their writings. One of these is Juan Williams of NPR. NPR is one of the most liberal outlets in our country and has prided themselves as being some kind of beacon of fairness. So what happened here:

NPR analyst Williams says he was abruptly fired - SignOnSanDiego.com

It seems that tolerance only goes one way.

Thoughts?

I think NPR has it right with what they said.

Later Wednesday, NPR issued a statement saying Williams' remarks "were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR."

He admitted that is someone identifies as Muslim they make him "nervous" (i.e. afraid). People with a primarily Muslim identity scare him, and his admitted bias against them colors his reporting. It would've been no different if someone talked about their fear of those that identify as Christian/black/Mexican, etc.

Yup, and if Juan had stated he keeps his eye on the nervous ones grabbing at thier underwear or shoes?

He said on TV that he gets nervous when Muslims are on his plane. I understand NPR's decision.

So they fired him for that but when he said that blaming all muslims for the act of 15 is wrong that didn't mean anything?

It adds to the anti-Muslim paranoia promoted by Fox News, for once.
How so? He expressed a personal opinion. How is that paranoid? How can you judge based on that? Given there are more than 100,000,000 Jihad approving Muslims on the planet, maybe he thinks his caution is justified? Most airlines will not sit a minor traveling alone next to a man, because statistically a man will more likely molest the child. Why is that OK but not this? And why must he lose his livelihood for being a little afraid? Shouldn't his view be treated with tolerance and understanding? Or are we only open minded towards views we agree with? And why does NPR fire him, but not another journalist who created a video called "How to speak TEA Bag"?

While looking up info on this I've read some comment that I find telling.

NPR Ends Williams' Contract After Muslim Remarks | 89.3 KPCC

Finally. So does this mean that NPR is getting serious about correspondents that give cover to Fox's ridiculous slogan, "Fair & Balanced?" What about Mara Liasson? I find her panel opinions far more egregious than those of Williams. Still, his remarks on O'Reilly were true to the Fox code & I applaud NPR for giving him the freedom to continue gracing the conservative airwaves with his token liberalism

Don't worry Johnny I'm sure they are watching her closely.

I didn't mean to dodge, I was just wondering why you would think they should have fired him for such an uncontroversial and obvious statement.

On what planet did I say he should be fired for that?

Do you not even know the context that the comments were made?

Williams responded: "Look, Bill, I'm not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."

Williams also warned O'Reilly against blaming all Muslims for "extremists," saying Christians shouldn't be blamed for Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.

Exactly.

One would think NPR would want some diverse opinions on its staff. That is, if one were to be foolish enough to believe that NPR believes in fairness.
