  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi all,

I was wondering: does anyone here know if Amy Lee uses a vocal enhancer in her recording sessions? I have a sinking suspicion that she does :sigh: . I have viewed a few Evanescence concerts on my local music station, and every time, Amy has done a pitiful job of singing (she seemed more focussed on adding angst to the songs than on vocal technique). I don't know if she's just nervous, or if she just has no talent whatsoever in the singing department.

Thoughts, anyone?
I am sure they clean it up a little, but being that her voice is so high in range, and she never goes to her head, and keeps it in her throat, i can see how you wouldn't enjoy it, cause it's a harsher sound...but most bands sound 'dirtier' on stage.

It may be the simple fact that she has the opportunity to do multiple takes? Or that she can just re-record a line or couple of lines that she messed up?
also if you noticed she does her harmony and backup and does some line overlapping, so the sound can't really be repeated on stage, since she can't sing 4 parts at once.

have you seen all the lyrics of them? they used to be a Christian band but they arent mainly a Christian band anymore and still the message of their music is a Christian message, not ALL songs are gonna be with a Christian message.
Tourniquet by Evanescence:

i tried to kill the pain
but only brought more
i lay dying
and i'm pouring crimson regret and betrayal
i'm dying praying bleeding and screaming
am i too lost to be saved
am i too lost?

my God my tourniquet
return to me salvation
my God my tourniquet
return to me salvation

do you remember me
lost for so long
will you be on the other side
or will you forget me
i'm dying praying bleeding and screaming
am i too lost to be saved
am i too lost?

my God my tourniquet
return to me salvation
my God my tourniquet
return to me salvation

my wounds cry for the grave
my soul cries for deliverance
will i be denied Christ

How in the world is that relevant to anything being discussed on this thread?

They never claimed to be a Christian band, Spirit. However, IMO, this song is influenced by Christianity, and actually acknowledges the consequences of suicide (something most rock bands don't do).

Actually, you are wrong. :p

Amy and Ben have both been friends of mine for the past 4 years and it was only when they got signed that I lost contect with them for a while. They use to promote themselves as a Xian band back when they had the Origin cd out. The fact is that they were all strong Xians, and for the most part, still are... They just chose a different path for the band to go which there is nothing wrong with. Ben did get a little carried away throughout the tour and I feel that was a big part of the reason he left the band. Now because of his mistakes, they get constantly flamed by the Xian community. Funny how we are always the first to cast stones...

Back on topic, remember there are a lot of factors to consider here. In a studio, you are setup with a high price condensor mic which is specifically used for, guess what, recording, you have multiple opprotunities to record something over if it doesn't sound right the first time, and you aren't running across a stage, jumping up and down, and losing 10,000 calories in a studio (I am living proof. I gained more weight this past year sitting in the studio than I care to talk about). And if she was wearing that stupid corset like I saw her wear on Leno, it's not a wonder is sounded horrible cause you can't breathe in those things. Another thing that needs taken into consideration is that Fallen was mixed and mastered by a professional recording company. All those things put together make for a perfect sound.

Now someone was talking about a vocoder? Voice modivication boxes are widely used for pop music in the studios to get it to sound perfect, but rarely used for rock. Amy's voice in the album is her own, it was just without distraction that she would get from jumping up and down while singing. Personally, I don't think she does a bad job on stage. I got to recently hear a few of their live performances and it wasn't too bad.
