  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hmmm...

If I had to pick one of those two, I would go with the Amplified. I loathe the NLT. The reason for that is that it is a revision of a paraphrase (The Living Bible), but markets itself as a new translation. I find that dishonest and a little devious. It takes incredible license with the text, inserting conjecture and bias all over the place. If it marketed itself as the paraphrase that it is, that theological bias could be excused (a paraphrase is always going to display the bias of those doing the work). But since it markets itself as a genuine translation, many people read its text thinking that it is portraying the genuine meaning of the original text. I have a big problem with that.

The Amplified, for what I have seen of it, just seems to put alternate renderings of words and phrases directly into the text instead of putting them in the margins or foot notes. I don't find that too troubling, per se.
