  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

For which of the following reasons would you or would you not vote for someone on the hit show America's Got Talent:

1 - They're practice something you find morally reprehensible (or something you practice). (Example, the judges let through the New York Gay Choir. Would you not vote for them simple because it's a "gay" choir.)
2 - Their age. (Example, you vote for an 8-year-old girl because she's 8 OR don't vote for her because she's 8.)
3 - Their talent. Not like, how talented they are but because you just don't like or really like what they're performing. (Example, you never vote for dancers because you aren't a fan of dancing.)
4 - Their story. (Example, someone has a sob story and you only vote for them because of it, or refuse to vote for them because of it.)
5 - Their legitimate abilities. (Example, HOW TALENTED THEY ARE.)

The show has a long history of voters being guilty of all of these, especially number 4, and I just want to see how viewers here would vote (or even if you don't watch it, just use your imagination).

Or if you read any of these and go "WHAT!? THAT'S STUPID!", what do you think of people who vote based on favoritism and unrelated things.

No impact on my voting.

2 - Their age. (Example, you vote for an 8-year-old girl because she's 8 OR don't vote for her because she's 8.)

No impact on my voting.

3 - Their talent. Not like, how talented they are but because you just don't like or really like what they're performing. (Example, you never vote for dancers because you aren't a fan of dancing.)

Some impact due to my own bias.

4 - Their story. (Example, someone has a sob story and you only vote for them because of it, or refuse to vote for them because of it.)
No impact as the voting is about talent, not storytelling.

5 - Their legitimate abilities. (Example, HOW TALENTED THEY ARE.)

All the impact! This is what my vote would be based upon.

1. As long as it is not so bad that I am forced to ignore it or call the police (some of the things I find morally wrong are also illegal), I don't see much of a problem.

2. Talent is in part based on age. A child of 5 who can do the math equations that most people can't do, and those who can normally have to take 8 years of higher education to do, has talent. Yes, it takes some talent to get to do them no matter how old you are, but because practice is such a huge decider of talent, he who has less practice has more natural talent. Of course, age isn't a perfect predictor of how much practice was put into it, but it is a huge part.

3. Well, it must be something I think is a talent. I don't think being able to balance a couple of things is a talent, so even if others do, I will vote it down. On the other hand, if I do not like what they are doing, but I recognize it is a talent, it may factor into if I consider is a worthy talent, but such factoring will be subconscious.

4. If this store relate to the talent, then maybe. Using chess as an example. A young man has a sob story about how he lost his family in a fire, but his skill is in chess. This is unrelated. A different young man has a sob story about how he was never allowed to play indoors, at all, period. This mean that he was unable to play chess till last year. Thus, his ability in chess has some relation to the sob story, and it may influence my vote.

5. No duh...

I would not vote for anyone because these types of show are nothing but brainless gunk and keep away good quality scripted tv off air.

To be fair, there ARE occasional acts on America's/Australia's (insert your own country :)) Got Talent that are worthy of merit. However, for the most part I agree with you. The TV execs know that the average Joe will pretty well accept anything that's dished out to them during peak hour. That's the time of day when most folks have their minds turned off.
