An American pastor is offering his life in exchange for a Nigerian Christian sentenced to death by hanging for killing a Fulani herdsman in self-defense during an attack on his farm.

Pastor William Devlin, the missions pastor of Infinity Bible Church in the South Bronx, New York, is speaking out in support of Sunday Jackson after the Supreme Court of Nigeria upheld the farmer's death sentence on March 7. Devlin first announced his plea when speaking to a group of reporters in Nigeria after the court made its decision.

"I was just filled with emotion," Devlin told The Christian Post. "I said to the press, 'My relationship with Jesus Messiah demands that I offer myself up for Sunday Jackson, much as Jesus Messiah offered Himself up for me.'"

Despite what many Christians believe, you cannot substitute for somebody else in a justice system.

Paying fines, debts etc. for somebody, yes. But personal sentence, no. You cannot go to jail instead of somebody else and you cannot be killed instead of somebody else.

Why not? People can in fact serve time for a crime they did not commit ( willingly or not) I guess by the same token one could take another's death sentence.

Because it does not work that way. The legal system requires that the individual who is convicted and sentenced to prison must serve their own sentence. It is not possible for another person to assume or serve someone else's prison time voluntarily or otherwise.

People can be falsely convicted and so if a crime was committed and someone is falsely convicted then the person who DID commit the crime usually will not face time. Likewise, if a person basicly takes the rap for someone and takes a plea bargain ( or even if they do not and are convicted then I guess one could say that they are voluntily serving time for a crime they did not commit.

We are not talking about being wrongfully convicted or about a fraud.

When a person A is convicted, you cannot say "I will go to prison instead of him". Well, you can technically say that, but it will not be allowed.
