  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Haha, no I haven't ever really been on this side of the forum, I just saw this in the recent discussions section and had to support my friends at AMD. I built my computer a year ago (ok a few days short of a year) anyway... I needed something that would be good for editing video seeing as I am a film major. So naturally I went for a dual processor. And with the research I did on the programs and stuff I went with AMD. Plus all my other intel computers have been pieces of crud. They just don't last long- but I suppose that is what I got for getting laptops. Anyway, I probably won't be in here again since I really don't know much about computers. Building one is the easy part!

ewwww.....sadly, my new system is a dell, not that it's bad, I like it, but I miss building my own, I just didn't have the money to do it this time (my last computer got blown out from a lightening strike :( last spring and it was only 6 months old) but I needed a new computer fast because I was in the middle of making a wedding video and had lost some stuff and I had to have it done within the week, lol

hey I just got myself an AMD ATHLON XP 2200+ 1.8GHz Socket A ThoroughBred 266MHz FSB to upgrade my old AMD 800. Anyone can recommend me a motherboard (I don't want any of that integrated stuff like network, sound etc. if possible).

thanks

Unfortunately integrated sound and LAN is hard to get away from. All but impossible.

AMD was HELPING not being biased. If they wanted to be biased they would have left the hyperthreading on but they said it was slower. Also, that article was at more sites than just that inquirer site, I just posted it because it was a little longer. Do a search with Google and you will see.

I didn't say hyperthreading was not a good technology, it is just not being implemented yet as software needs to be written to take advantage of it.
Technology moves so fast anyhow that it will be obsolete by next year. :D

By the way, I live in the Silicon Valley so most of these companies are within 20 miles of me.
umm.. hyperthreading will not be obsolete by next year... cuz prescott is going to also use hyperthreading (improved version).. tehrefore more programs will probably try and use the hyperthreading even more then before... which can only be a plus to get it..

and most major sites i go to show that intel is better... hardocp is one along with 3dgameman and anandtech... prove me with a link if im wrong.. i personally cant provide link without enough posts...

Why do people continue to make statements without backing up what they say? where does it say that its of no use? it improves gaming and it improves multitasking since ur computer reads it as 2 cpus and not 1 single cpu...

hardforum then go to intel section and search on hyperthreading... or hyperthreading in all the forums.. u will not find one place that says its of no use without a specific program that makes use of it... its like going to 2cpu.com forums and saying that having an SMP computer basically useless unless ur ripping dvds or using photoshop.. just watch urself get flamed

hardforum.com /showthread.php?s=&threadid=663720

cheated the link so just put it back together.. here u will see actual benchmarkings..

some links that people are referring to (including the inquirer) is probably the Xeon version of the HT.. which was the older one that didnt work very well... however the new version on prescotts and C model P4s work much better... improving performance in both gaming and raw processing speeds

here is another one from our trusted hardforum

The only benefit is when you are multitasking or using apps designed to take advantage of HT.

All you have to do is show me proper benchmarks where it makes a difference in apps that aren't programmed for it, and I'll believe you.. Take for instance any older game and Windows 98. Your operating system to your programs need to be optimized to take full advantage of it.

Straight from Intel's website:

"1Look for systems with the Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology logo which your system vendor has verified utilize Hyper-Threading Technology. Performance will vary depending on the specific hardware and software you use"

http://www.intel.com/performance/

In case you don't realize what hyperthreading is, it's merely a way for the CPU to process two threads at once IF the program can see what it is and make use of it.

Intel requires an operating system optimized for HT tech

http://www.intel.com/products/ht/hyperthreading_more.htm

It also requires apps to be optimized, such as photoshop which is a multithreaded app.

"I can report that Hyper-Threading works--but only with the right combination of applications. Just because a system supports Hyper-Threading doesn't necessarily mean that you will automatically see performance gains.
Hyper-Threading boosts the performance of applications that are either multithreaded or multitasking. Very few of today's mainstream apps are multithreaded, so the best chance you have of seeing performance benefits from a Hyper-Threading-enabled system is with multitasking applications."
