  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is, most likely, the most beloved hymn of all time. The sad thing is that most hymnals do not contain all of the verses penned by Newton.

I love the inscription on his tombstone:

"John Newton, clerk, once an infidel and libertine, a seller of slaves in Africa, was, by the rich mercy of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the faith he had long labored to destroy."

I believe this is the complete, original text. (Of course, verse 7 was added later, bet as become well integrated with the hymn- try it sometime without it- I like it bettter to end with the 6th verse) Original title was "Faith's Review and Expectation"- think about that as you read it...

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, Who called me here below,
Shall be forever mine.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

Saddest time I ever heard it played was at ground zero. A lone piper played it in rememberance of all who died. It was so moving.
I am sure that it was. This hymn is so moving, no matter how it is done-full symphonic to a lone trumpet; pipe organ to bagpipes; full SATB choir to a single human voice.

I have that song on CD played by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Who'd have thought bagpipes would be a UK number 1?!

Those bagpipes get me tearin' every time...not sure why.

Things often don't go easy for me... My home is opposed to the love of God, and I am not in agreement with my church fully... Torn between oppinions I often find myself asking the question, "Am I serving God as I should be?" ...

...And yet so simple and so awesome it is... That this salvation was given to me as a free gift, by grace so amazing and so free! Though I may never have the answers to many theological questions, I can walk in the love and grace of this Jesus... Truly, 'Amazing Grace' cannot be matched. Glory to God.
