  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

1 John 1:8-10
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

1 John 3:6-10
6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him. 7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

I read this last night after a weekend of heavy drinking and eating.

This is not a habitual thing for me. I have drank less than 10 times this year but I have been struggling with overeating due to heavy restriction of calories, since the beginning of this year, in an effort to lose weight.

I have lost about 50 pounds and am only 10 pounds away from goal weight. But, the stress of it all (turning away all social engagements, business engagements, family time etc) causes me to overeat when I start to eat any sugary foods and drinking magnifies the craves and reduces all inhibition and self-control.

So, to my way of thinking, I am not only drinking to excess but then engaging in gluttony, or self sabotage or, I don't really know 100% what the exact sin would be but the action of drinking too much and then overeating seems sinful. Also, I don't view these things as glorifying God or being a light to unbelievers (my family) so it would seem to me that I am indeed sinning.

In an effort to understand, I read the above verses last night.

With regards to 1 John 1:8-10, I believe I am a sinner, have confessed my sins, asked for forgiveness and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior.

With regards to 1 John 3:6-10, sin is of the devil, and 'No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are,'

Am I truly saved then if I continue to sin? Am I sinning? I have prayed and acknowledged that I'm not sure about either of these points but, really, I am sure I am saved because I have done what the Bible says saves us according to Romans 10:9-13:

9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[e] 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”[f]

Any and all help is appreciated. On one hand, I feel broken hearted. I certainly do not want to be of the devil and I want to live my life for Christ and have assurance that I will be with Him when the time comes. On the other hand, I feel like I'm misunderstanding something and overreacting. On the other hand, I feel like I could want that to be the case because the consequences are devastating and I wouldn't know what the point of anything was anymore...

If you could help me, I would be forever grateful, thank you and God bless.

If you are over eating and drinking heavily you are being a carnal Christian and sitting on the fence. But I am not the judge. You may not go in the rapture. But if you want to be a Christian you should probably clean up your life a little and you have the power to do so.

Is this despite the fact that is situational and occasional and not a lifestyle?

I'm overeating from habitually undereating. Are both sins or just overeating?

I am not offended by truth, so please don't worry about being straight with me, because I come here for fellowship and correction/assistance from brothers/sisters.

Thank you

Clearly it is difficult for others to know your heart, but I would say that you would be unlikely to be thinking about gluttony and drinking more than you should in terms of sinning against almighty God if you were not a Christian. I am reminded of the jailer at Philippi who asked the apostles how to be saved. They replied, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved," not "Make sure that you are never guilty of gluttony and drinking more than you should, and you will be saved." Of course, as a saved person, you will realise more and more that you do still fall into sin, and will confess that sin, and seek the Lord's help in battling against it in the future. Think of David, and his great sins involving Bathsheba and Uriah. He confessed those sins to God - see Psalm 51 - and God forgave him. I hope that encourages you.

Have you believed in the person Jesus, for Eternal Life, if so then yes. You are a pernamnet born again child of God.

If no, then you are not a pernamnet born again child of God.

Thank you so much! If I could hug you, I would :weary:

I truly, sincerely want to live for Jesus Christ, dedicated my life and soul to Him and have prayed, repented, fasted and read scripture.

The restriction of calories has led me into a cycle of binge/fast/binge and I drink too much because I don't actually eat that much and alcohol affects me much quicker and differently than it used to in much smaller amounts. I have, for the most part, abstained from alcohol this year as compared to most of my life where it was a regular occurrence every weekend!

I feel ashamed, embarrassed but determined to not persist down a path of disorder and dysfunction. Not drinking and eating a very low calorie diet program c. 500 calories a day started as a way to achieve health and, I've met a number on a scale, but my brain feels all nutty trying to recalibrate what it means to eat normally when the food is not provided for me!

It just feels like a tortuous distraction from Jesus, instead of the healthy journey it began as, and I acknowledge it but my biggest concern was to not be of the devil! I reject that 100%!

Yes, you have encouraged me. Thank you so much.

Yes, 100%.

It is this scripture that worried me: 1 John 3:6-10, 'No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are,'

Just my opinion.
Probably anxiety and spiritual hunger, or some other spiritual issue,
i believe though that sin of eating too much doesn't exists, is something spiritual the sin, is not eating until being full.
Just don't get discouraged there are millions struggling in some area, everyone does.
The important part is stop the grave sins that quench the Holy spirit and ruin our communion with God, the rest of the small issues are not so urgent we just need to keep trying until God helps us, he has a lot of patience, and i believe he is very pleased with someone that is trying to do good, follow Jesus, and do Gods will, even if that person does a lot of mistakes, the worse is not failing sometimes, is giving up and getting discouraged.

If you know what you're doing is wrong and you sincerely seek to curb it because of your love for Christ, then that's an indication of being saved.

Also it's a matter of practicing sin as John calls it. Practicing sin the way a doctor practices medicine. As in sinning is a full-time occupation. As a Christian our stumbles in our battles of the flesh should prompt us to pray to God for help in overcoming them.

"15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it." - Romans 7:15-20

So as you can see, even Paul struggled with and anguished over weaknesses of the flesh.

The two verses you quoted indicate an ongoing lifestyle, or continuous attitude of repentance. 1 Jn. 3:6-10 is not talking about absolute sinless perfection. Therefore, it's about direction in life, not a state of being. Consider this: the sinful nature causes people to be self-centered. If God made us sinlessly perfect, it would not take long until we're thinking that we overcame sin, and think we don't still need our Savior's deliverance. Therefore, God has to leave us in some minimal sin in order to keep our conscience realizing we still need Jesus to save us. Paul acknowledges the reality of our continued sinfulness by saying, "the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is alive because of righteousness" (in Rom. 8).

With that said, why do you think you're a glutton? Is it because after eating "too much" you feel physically miserable? You're simply experiencing the consequence of your lack of self-control. Did you drink too much alcohol? You're experiencing the consequence of it, and of course you feel guilty if you were staggering drunk. It doesn't mean you're not saved (spiritually) or lost salvation. It means you've lost your peace in relationship with God. So you need to consider that your sense of peace with God is a treasure that you will not trade for any worldly satisfaction.

Consider this: if you think you should be perfect in self-control, then since that is one of the fruits of the Spirit, then it means you have to be perfect in love, in joy, in peace, in faithfulness, in goodness, etc. etc., IOW sinlessly perfect. IMO you should learn how to live by faith, which means practicing the awareness of God's presence, seeking Him for help in all you do. In this way you will glorify God by your faith. Stop worrying about your salvation, because what Jesus did for you was sufficient to save you completely. So you should stop "working" on your sins, and start/continue your real spiritual work, by trusting Jesus to deliver you from all unrighteousness (1 Jn. 1:9). Live by the grace of God, not by your will-power. Surrender to God and let Him direct your will.

The idea is to trust Jesus for your eternal destiny 100%, and it is possible with such encouragement as what the apostle and elder John gave us in 1 Jn. 5:1 - "Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God." It says "everyone," so that includes you, if indeed you trust Jesus to completely take care of your eternal future. It says, "has been born of God," so that means God will never let you go, since you are His child. If you need chastisement, He will do it, according to Heb. 12. A guilty conscience is part of that chastisement, the first level. Sometimes if we persist in sin, the next level is economic hardship. The idea is that we learn how to overcome by faith, when we find ourselves, our will-power, too weak to avoid succumbing to temptation. Jesus said, "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Therefore, it is the devil who wants you believe that you're not saved or has lost salvation. If anyone even suggests to you a condemnation, don't listen to them. Only listen to God, who said, "I will never leave you, nor will I ever forsake you." Jesus said, "My sheep hear My voice, and they follow Me, and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish." Once these words become the basis of our relationship with God, and we are practicing our awareness of His presence, and we are fellowshipping with other Christians, and we are memorizing scripture and reading it, and praying, then how can any of us be condemned, seeing it says, "the righteous shall live by faith"? Your faith is being tested, so keep on trusting Christ as your deliverer for the rest of your natural life.

First, congratulations! It is not easy to lose weight and I commend you for your achievement. As for drinking and eating as sinful, please give yourself a break.... please. God knows your heart and knows how hard you have worked to live a healthier lifestyle that being said, He doesn't want you to dwell in self pity and isolation. This certainly does not glorify Him.
So what can you do? Ask Him to help you overcome temptations. This is why He gave us His Holy Spirit, to be our "Helper". Soon enough you will see a change from avoidance to engagement. I am certain your family and friends miss you and with the full Armour of God you will have that self- control you are seeking.
Be blessed.

P.S. This is not a salvation issue. So rest in that.
