• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I hear voices in my head, they have successfully convinced me to give almost all my money to charity, they say that they are christian and that I will go to hell because I did not give enough money in the beginning, I did give alot but used some money on myself, and I also quit a job that the voices commanded me into, afterwards I committed myself to the hospital as I have a history of Schizophrenia, I hear them everyday and they are telling me that I will go to hell. I will continue giving all my money, but they say that even that isn't good enough.

Ken, you do not need to give away all your money in order to escape from hell. That is a negative thought which we might all have from time to time, but which in your thinking has got a shade too strong.

Speak to your doctor; it looks as if your thinking is not quite what it could be; being controlled and dominated by one thought like this is making your life impossible. You simply cannot give away all your money; it would leave you far too vulnerable when you are already unwell.

Go to see your doctor, and also find a minister to talk to about the spiritual aspects of your situation. Christians are called to believe certain things, but we are not all called to extreme poverty; some are, some are not. I doubt if you would be called to extreme poverty at the same time as dealing with a very difficult illness; that would be too much for you to bear, and therefore I think it is not likely.

So, keep your money, see a doctor and see a priest.

God be with you.

"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:44

Don't worry. Try your best and God will do the rest.

Also...since you're a Christian-seeker, I say try reading the Bible. You'll find the comfort you need ("seek and you will find").

Unfortunately, schizophrenia is a very real disorder that affects many lives. One of the ways it can show up in an individual is hearing voices that the person believes is religious in nature. There are people who do believe that God is telling them to do things that are nonsensical (such as giving away all money). It can dramatically affect the quality of their life. The scenario mentioned here is one that is entirely possible for a person with the disorder. I would much rather run the risk of feeding a troll than fail to suggest he see a doctor.

To the other posters of this thread I will say that telling a person with a mental disorder that they just need Jesus or something or someone of faith is not going to help their medical condition. If a person is hearing voices, they need to see a doctor and find some medication to reduce the symptoms and look into a program to help them live their life to the fullest.

No, your not going to hell. Your fine, if your giving money is a good thing. The devil is the one that is telling you that. God does not put heavy burdens on people like that. God tells you what you need to do and learn from Him.

Most likely this is an illness too. Check with your doctor and see what's really going on first.

Don't worry hun. Your safe, your not going to hell. God loves you, and He'll save you. I'll pray for you!

Roman Catholics have at least in the past (I cannot say in modern times) taught false teachings concerning indulgences. Abuses in selling and granting indulgences were a major point of contention when Martin Luther initiated the Protestant Reformation (1517). Evidently the voices in your head and your life's experiences have somehow convinced you into thinking (the old lie) that you could possibly buy your way into Heaven...I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that is not true. The "stairway to Heaven" cannot be bought. Salvation cannot be earned or bought, it is a free gift from God, through faith alone in Christ alone by grace alone for the glory of God alone. I hope and pray these words penetrate your thoughts and the Lord Jesus will use them for His glory, and set you free from the bondage and burden of sin. Jesus Christ paid it all on a dark cross on Calvary, to saved wretched sinners like me whom do not deserve nor will I ever deserve a place in glory with God, but thanks be to God, He extends mercy and grace to whosoever believes.

The voices I hear say that any human would throw their normal life away, obey the voices, and use all their time and all money, even throw their homes away to give to children in need. They see me as the worst being, my guess is that they are christians and they see me as one who communcate with the dead.

In all sincerity you need to find a good pastor right away!!! Go to a good Baptist church or something... this might be more than just schizophrenia... this very well could be demonic...

Get to a real Doctor and get your meds.

Ken, the voices are your own thoughts. They seem to be outside you, but they are not; you are not well.

Go and see your doctor, please.

Go to a church and talk to the pastor about this.

You can't buy your way out of Hell. You can't buy salvation either. You need to believe that Jesus paid the price for your sins on the cross, died and rose on the third day and you will be saved --- for free!
As others have said, you need professional counseling by a pastor and possibly treatment by a doctor.
You need to attend to yourself first before you can give anything to anyone. Once you are healthy, attending a good church, studying your Bible and growing, then you may be called to give. God be with you and may these tormenting voices be silent in your mind in the name of Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Peace, love and grace to you. Amen

Your salvation does not depend on whether or how much you give, we are saved by faith thru grace, and after we are saved God can do good work thru us.

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:8-10 (NIV)

Ken, don't think you're the only one dealing with these issues. Go to the doctor and get meds.. I'm on the right medication and I don't have any schizo problems really. It's about finding the right doctor and the right meds. Put it in the hands of God and rest assured.

My son is Dxed with schizophrenia, but exactly half his doctors over the years have told me his thinking is not disordered as a classic schizophrenic is. I have Asperger's syndrome. (We are called Aspies for short. Is there a non-derogatory nickname for schizophrenics? Please let there be; I am tired of typing it out. ;) ) I believe my son has it as well. He hears voices as you do. And he has wierd behavior at times that I figured out to be when he eats a lot of bread, pasta, oatmeal, etc. As long as he stays off gluten he manages amazingly well. I had him free of it for several days and I have never seen him so clear headed and 'normal.' He said he never felt better. But when money runs out he starts eating bread again and he becomes intolerable.

I am trying to get him a test for Celiac disease, which is not uncommon in schizotypal disorders and autism. I believe schizophrenia is classified as an ASD. Am I right?

Anyway, his schizophrenic symptoms are secondary. That is, he lacks the primary disordered thinking. Schizophrenia is a frequent misDx of Asperger's. Similarly with OCD. The obsessive behaviors in Asperger's are functional: folding clothes in a particular way obsessively results in a neat pile of folded clothes, where in classic OCD avoiding stepping on cracks does not result in anything functional. And you write too coherently, IMHO, to have a thought disorder. But I am not a professional, so take this with a large shaker of salt.

I hope this helps. And by the way, have you ever watched "A Beautiful Mind"? It is a wonderful true story about a man with schizophrenia and how he dealt with his "demons."

I hear voices in my head, too and often obey them.
Going to see a psy will help the voices to go down in intensity.
That is what I do. I recommend you do it, too.
Don't give away all your money, and read the bible.
