Am I A Heretic?

Help me understand the phrase from the Apostles Creed..."He descended into hell". I know there is a difference of opinion even within the Reformed faith. What is your take and why? If possible, keep it simple for this fallible, finite mind.

I was talking with a family member and she and I remember being taught that Christ literally descended to Hell. We were raised in a conservative Reformed church. I believe Christ experienced the full wrath of God while on the cross. I know Sproul does not believe Christ's spirit went to Hell(the "place"). Whereas I think MacArthur says Christ went there to proclaim victory over death and Satan.

I just wanted to get others thoughts on the subject and possibly the Bible verses they'd use to back up their beliefs. I could be incorrect in saying I think a person's choice of beliefs on this subject is similar to the non-salvific issue of infant vs. adult baptism (???)

Hey, Rino! Thanks for responding.

Infant baptism. Replaced circumcision. Read Macarthur's beliefs on the subject and he presents a strong case, but still lean towards "Infant"- that's how I was raised.

I am torn on the "descending to hell" debate. Completely. I don't believe Christ went to hell on Saturday or "Limbo" or any of those types of arguments, but my question is whether or not Christ's spirit went to the literal place called "Hell" while He was on the cross.

I'd like to know people's beliefs and why. Hopefully they have some scripture to back it up. AND I REALLY HOPE I can learn something along the way and come to a conclusion instead of riding the fence.
