  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Am I a biggot if I:

1) State that homosexuality is a sin in the eyes of God.

2) If I state homosexuality is a sin, just as is pre-marital sex, gluttony, greed, and slothfullness?

3) If though I think homosexuality is a sin, it does not mean that injustice nor denial of civil rights should take place because of said sin.

Now, tell me if I'm a biggot? If so, please provide evidence?

The third part is the only part that matters to me. I don't really care what you (or anyone else) THINKS about homosexuality. A person can think whatever they want. It's when they start trying to pass legislation, or discriminate against gay people, based on religious opinions like this that I begin to find it wrong.
It might be different for Christians, but since I do not believe in the concept of sin, the first two don't affect me, as long as you don't tell me I'm going to hell, which I find just plain rude. As I understand it there is some disagreement over what God thinks about homosexuality, so until God gives us a call to clear it up, I think we're all going to disagree a bit.
Short answer: no, you're not a bigot.

This is genuinely hilarious:
bigot 1598, from M.Fr. bigot, from O.Fr., supposedly a derogatory name for Normans, the old theory (not universally accepted) being that it springs from their frequent use of O.E. oath bi God. Plausible, since the Eng. were known as goddamns in Joan of Arc's France, and during World War I Americans serving in France were said to be known as les sommobiches (see also son of a *****). But the earliest Fr. use of the word (12c.) is as the name of a people apparently in southern Gaul. The earliest Eng. sense is of "religious hypocrite," especially a female one, and may be influenced by beguine. Sense extended 1687 to other than religious opinions.

So it seems, lads and lasses, that if one devoutly and ardently practices the tenets of one's faith, and if one is not Norman, he may not be called a bigot.

In reality, today 'bigot' is just a hate label thrown around by activists to shame their opponents into silence.

I agree that your position as described in #3 means that you are not a bigot.

This is slightly off-topic, but as we're on the subject, I hope you don't mind if I ask a question that's had me wondering for some time, and I've never really gotten a complete answer about it. For what reason, or with what motivation, did God decide that homosexual intercourse ought to be considered "sinful"? And I don't expect you to know the mind of God, but if you could speculate, it might help satisfy my curiosity.

If you're really curious, you could try praying to Him to see if you get an answer. I'm serious. Ask Him to reveal the answer and to just answer you. Seriously. Just one time go somewhere you can be alone and undisturbed and just go and open your mind, and talk to Him like he's really there, and ask him to give you a sign that you will recognize. Make it something you'll know when you see it.

I was trying to phrase my question in such a way that it would be clear what I was asking, and as such I used language that seemed to presuppose the existence of God. This is because the person with whom I was speaking believes that God exists. I do not share this belief, but I am interested in learning about the beliefs of those who do have it.

I do respect what you're saying, though. Since it would be intellectually-dishonest of me not to acknowledge the possibility that I could be mistaken, I will attempt the honest and sincere communication that you describe. I am distracted with other things right now, but will probably have an opportunity to make the attempt tomorrow. I will inform you of how it goes.

Meanwhile, would you be interested in addressing the question that I asked of KalEl76?

What happens when god answers with something that your religious views disagree with? It's happened with many people on this very board after all..

It's not like that. WHat I'm talking about is you ask God for a sign like "God, I'm going fishing tomorrow. If you're really there, let me catch a fish. While I'm in the shade. But only there." Something specific, but reasonable. From what I'm told, He always answers.

IMHO, I would say no. You have personal beliefs on the subject in regards to a religious view of it but over all, day to day, real life, eye to eye, etc - I would say no.

I don't think you're a bigot.

You hold some political views I don't agree with, and some religious views that I no longer share, but you seem to have a sense of where to draw a line about it. So as with others who have posted here, I can easily respect your beliefs about #1 and #2, even though I disagree, because of your #3.

Mah $.02, adjusted for ego inflation. ;)

Sounds like putting God to the test to me.

Anyway, I've known people who (claim to have) tried it and not got a response.

A bigot would try to impose his belief system on another. If you aren't doing this, then despite what you think about a group you are showing tollerance towards them. Bigots also tend to be hypocrits as well. The hypocrisy is evident as they would be screaming injustice if another group treated them as they're treating others.
This seems to be the logical leep that many fundies in the US can't make.
You understand this, so I applaud you.

I know I'm wasting my time here but I'll respond anyway.

wrong.
It's when they take that extra step and impose their faith on others without reason.

In the case of same-sex marriage there is no logical fair reason to be against it. The best reason I've seen mustered is "because it's the will of the majority". We all know this isn't a valid reason to deny a subgroups of our population benefits that other groups have. This isn't a majority rules country. If it was then we wouldn't need a constitution.
