  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

"Semper Reformada"

What is meant by this? Is it that once set it will drift and needs to be brought back or is there a continuance of what reforming means?

Would it be more accurate to be referred to as "Reforming Christians" rather than "Reformed Christians"?

Something I've been reading brought these questions to mind.

Whatever I contribute will certainly be most elementary as compared to the studious theologians on this forum!
That said though, for me the 'Semper Reformanda' or always reforming reminds me that I can easily drift away from the closeness I desire to maintain with our Lord and that by continued self examination, prayer for His guidance and as much study of His word as time allows I will continue to increase my knowledge both of Him and His word. If these protective measures are not maintained all of us will easily drift off a true course of sound doctrines as He declares to be of utmost importance and though my fear of Him is one of great reverence and awe I still know that His discipline will bring me back with His shepherds crook one way or another into safe harbor! I choose to do it because I love HIm and desire to know Him better daily and thereby I am Semper Reformanda! Soli deo gloria!

Semper reformanda a sola Scriptura.

What is meant is that we are always reforming ourselves, our doctrine, and our lives to holy Scripture.

Soli Deo Gloria

Here's a good article about the topic: Always Reforming, They Say, So, What Needs Reforming Today?

Quote from R.C. Sproul, Jr. Presbyterian minister, Director of Highlands Study Center
Our Hearts. We are a people who are proud of our soundness of thought. We soundly argue that sound thoughts ought to lead to sound lives. But we, like the rest of the church, despite having portions of our minds transformed, are conformed to the patterns of this world. We are haughty, proud, and such, we know leads to falls. In our rightful pursuit of the crown rights of King Jesus, in seeking after His kingdom, we have neglected to pursue His righteousness, or worse, we have defined righteousness as the ability to quote obscure theologians from centuries past.

Until more of us can even name the fruit of the Spirit than can name the five points of Calvinism, we will continue to affirm the Confession, while confessing that we live like our neighbors. Until we stop sneering at piety, until we are more interested in dying to self than we are in ascending to power, we will remain impotent. Until we learn that more important than a well-ordered worldview is a view of the world unhindered by the logs in our eyes, we will remain the blind leading the blind. Reformation begins within each of us, as we pick up our cross and follow Him. It extends from there to the family, as we wash our lives with the water of the Word, as we raise His children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. From there it reaches the church, where we together are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people. Only when we behave as sojourners and pilgrims will we then reach the world, that when they speak against us as evildoers, they may, by our good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation. All His enemies will never be made a footstool, until we who are His friends first put to death our own flesh. That's why what needs to be Reformed is us...

Awesome quote from Mr Sproul-regardless of whatever tradition!

OK I can see. It's not a continual growth/change of the doctrine as it is a continual growth/change of the individual & church. Is that what I'm hearing!

From my experience, in Reformed theology, we all are reforming. I am reforming and my local church is reforming. One reason is that "Reformed" communicates that there is something fixed and unchanging about who we are because we are serving God who has given us his infallible, sufficient Word. "Reforming," on the other hand, suggests that we recognize that we are fallible in interpreting that Word. We are ever in need of renewing, reevaluating, and deepening our knowledge of Scripture. As children of the Reformation, then, we must ever be both reformed and reforming.

I hope this helps. I am learning as well.
