Well, no. tstor gives a good overview of the distinction that has been drawn lately.
Even among the actual alt-right there are very few, if any, actual "white supremacists". Just about none of them wants to actually lord over anyone else.
A rally by a number of people advocating for their own racial group and interests was planned and given permission, and the state governor declared a state of emergency and had police break up the rally. Sound like something you'd blame on the people trying to have the rally?
Given the massive and sudden demographic shifts occurring in the West, and the identity politics that have taken hold, you really shouldn't be that surprised that some white people have started playing that game too.
I'm not sure what to make of this, I thought we had put this kind of thing behind us a long time ago. Is anyone tracking this? I can't seem to get a lot of information about it.
I noticed that thread is under review, apparently for good reason.
Your previous statements, particularly claiming that Breitbart and Bannon are the face of the alt-right, would suggest otherwise.I know the difference.
Not really. Everyone involved in organizing and putting on the rally was open about inviting alt-light figures to come speak. Uniting the whole right wing and all that. Those alt-light people just didn't want to come speak there.Yea so it's just a coincidence that they are calling it 'unite the right'
Too soon to say.I blame an act of violence on the one who committed it. The counter protestors can be ignorant to, I just want to know how far this goes.
Anyway, I'm kind of following what's going on. What's happened is that the rally has been declared unlawful and everyone was told to disperse as of maybe 20 minutes ago, despite the organizers complying with all permit requirements and the like.
I'm just getting bits and pieces but it doesn't look good. Yea the police had to break it up because the crowd was getting nasty.
I don't know how you figure, Bannon and Breitbart are the face of the Alt-Right. I am disturbed because along with anti-globalist and anti-immigration agendas there is a fringe group of white supremacists who are identifying themselves with the alt-right. It disturbs me because Charlottesville VA is in a state of emergency.
It was always there. There is nothing inherently wrong with the Alt-Right, I don't like everything about their political agenda but it does reflect a wave of nationalism and protectionism that is sweeping Europe and the United States. I just don't like the fact that White Supremacists have piggy backed into their ranks.
I would not define Bannon or his network as "alt-right." I would probably use Richard Spencer's term "alt-light" to describe them. The faces of the alt-right would be Mr. Spencer, Jared Taylor, David Duke, Sam Dickson, etc. Some other figures could be flocked in such as John Derbyshire.
I was a student at UVa during the summers of the 60's, so this is almost in my back yard. I still visit C-ville a few times per year. (I live about 1.5 hrs away).
This has apparently been building up for some time. There was a student revolt at Lexington, Va. (about 40 or so miles away) as I recall a couple of yr ago, and some at Washington and Lee Univ. (where Lee was president after the war) objected to the flags at student events where they were required to attend, so they placed them somewhere else.
Also there was a conflict in Lexington itself about confederate flags in parades, and I'm not sure what the outcome was, but I think that flags are only allowed at certain civil war events.
Groups such as KKK and White Supremists are hate groups and I have no use for them at all. My great grandfather and his brother fought in the Stonewall Brigade. I've never owned a confederate flag or taken part in any civil war event. (we lost; its over) If our African-American friends are offended by the statues, such as the ones in Richmond, then I'm not opposed to their removal, or have them placed in a museum.
We have many more important things to attend to.
Just wondering if this is America being made great again.
From what I saw it was the Friday night assembly on the university campus that was unlawful, not Saturday's rally.Dang.
If they had a permit, why in the world would the city post/say that? Hopefully it's something as simple and honest as they genuinely didn't know.
The car was driven into anti-protesters, which killed one person and hit I believe six others.Someone just drove a car into a crowd of of counter protestors
Did they go to the rally before of after it was reinstated? That they had a permit? No, they all knew. The permit to assemble in that specific park was granted a while ago, then it was revoked by the city yesterday or the day before. They went to court I think yesterday and a judge reinstated the permit. Everyone knew the rally was above-board, and they found a way to help antifa run them out of the city regardless.
