Alpha Course

I've never been on an Alpha course, as they're meant for people with little knowledge, so I am unsuitable. (Not saying I have loads of knowledge, just that I have more than they would be expecting of me).

Only problem I can see with Alpha is that it is charismatic. As I understand things part of the course involves trying to speak in tongues. I happen to consider charismatic tongues-speaking as unbiblical, unnecessary - though I will not go as far as those who say it is evil/wrong/whatever. Just not for me.

The course shouldn't involve trying to get people to speak in tongues. The topic comes up in one of the sessions, but as for trying to get people to practice tongues, that's not normal to Alpha Courses.

The Alpha course is very generic and can be applied and adapted by different sections of the wider church. Its feel will depend more on the church that you attend rather than the content itself, which is pretty straight christianity. That's from a catholic-leaning Anglican who is undoubtedly not coming from the same page as Nicky Gumbel on many things.

I started going to an Alpha course a few years ago, but didn't get much out of it so left. I would recommend the Christianity Explored course too - I still find it really helpful to go over the basics of Christianity.
