It's not odd at all. Infact I heard this given as one of the reasons. Besides Canon Law forbidding it.
I'm not promoting the practice. But the idea of trying to keep Jesus separate from the rubbish of the world seems entirely backwards and anti-incarnational.

Well thats not how I took it. The physical presence of the Lord deserves respect & reverence at all times. Most homes cannot provide this even on a good day.
