Shouts and tears of joy overcame the group of refugees as Edoras fully entered view. The Golden Hall was not the home they had left behind, nor could it ever replace it. But the bedraggled peasants who could muster some measure of gladness were thankful to have reached safety. This was the great fortified city where the kings of their ancestors had reigned with wisdom and benevolence, and it was a stronghold where prior generations had withstood attacks that, while not strong enough to require a retreat to Helm's Deep, had been great enough for songs to be written.
While Orc presence was small enough that it had gone largely unknown by the Rohirrim Outriders until now, the peasants and and the warriors who had escorted them were frightened to be out in the open, rolling plains. For most of the day they'd been without a place to run to or hide in should a roving warband of Orcish pillagers find them. The sacking of the village could only mean trouble, though. Burn was certain that these small raiding parties were like cockroaches: For every one you saw, dozens, even hundreds more probably went unseen and unchecked.
The gates opened as the sun began to set behind the hills, letting in the weary travelers. Soldiers rushed to take them to a place to rest, and also supplied food and water for them. While the refugees were tended to, those who'd stood to fight would no doubt be held accountable and asked about what had displaced these poor farmers. Burn looked down to his comrades from his horse as the weary steed lazily walked over to them.
"I want to thank you all again for helping to defend these unfortunate folk." he began sadly. "The time is coming soon when our hosts will wish to know what transpired, and what hand we had in it. If what Isi, the blind woman, said was true then we'll no doubt be taking some sort of offensive action." He hesitated a moment, tapping the bottom of his helm. "That's not to say all of us will be asked to go to battle. I mean the Riders will be sent to find whoever is commanding these orcs, pierce their defenses, and slay him before this can escalate to a full war. I, uh... I don't think many of you will want to set off on such an endeavor, and some of you are probably unfit to do so. But if any of you are willing to help in any way, please do so."
