  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Here is a question that I have wondered about for many years.........

When the author of the book of 2 Timothy wrote:

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."

in 2 Timothy 3:16+17, did he consider what he was writing to be Scripture??

Did the writer see himself as actually writing "holy scripture" or was he referring to the scriptures of what we now refer to as the "Old Testament"??

Roughly what Bear.Fr00t said. Paul (or whoever) would have in mind the Hebrew Scriptures, but since its a statement about the purpose and nature of scripture itself then it applies to anything that is Scripture (TM).

God gives the example of how he wrote the Bible, from Jeremiah 36

[1] And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
[2] Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day.

I think the author did refer to OT authors because it would be pretty boastful to suggest that of himself he brought forth holy scripture and one of the requirements of following God is to be humble[/QUOTE
